There are plenty of reasons you might want to landscape your garden. You may want a garden you can truly enjoy, you may be looking to add value to your property or you may just be a passionate hobbyist who loves all thing gardening. Whatever your reasons, it’s important you’re fully prepared for the process, so carrying out your grandiose architectural vision is as successful and stress-free as possible.

One answer is to get in the pros, but it’ll cost you. The other option is to become the masterful amateur landscaper/horticulturalist you’ve always dreamed of being. If you fall into the latter category, here’s your starter pack for getting to grips with all things landscaping.

Start with the basics

Rome (or in this case, your garden) wasn’t built in a day, and your landscaping project will need to start out with carrying out the fundamentals that will make your garden a blank canvas to be built on. These include:

Planning your basic vision for the garden – do you want a completely flat surface or multiple levels? What features might you want to see and how will you accommodate for them? What materials will you need, and what budget?

Clearing out and levelling the ground to the degree you’ve decided on.

Clearing the area of any debris

Weeding the entire area

None of the above is the Hollywood, headline stuff you’re going to really enjoy doing, but you can be sure it is right up there as the most important part of the process. Once you’ve got the hard labour out of the way, you can move on to the fun stuff.

Create your design

The “fun stuff” in question generally surrounds creating and implementing your design. This is where you can get your creative juices flowing and really start to make your dream garden that bit more of a reality. Here’s some bits you’ll want to consider:

Decide on zones – do you want different parts of your garden to offer different purposes? A zone for hosting, for example, or a zone simple for aesthetics and horticulture? Whatever purpose or multiple purposes you wish for your new garden to serve, make sure they’re accommodated for in a clear, structured zone format.

Are you going to have a water feature? – a centrepiece of many a fancy garden, decide early on whether a water feature is going to be part of your design. If it is, you need to consider plumbing it in and accommodating for it space wise with your zoning.

Any decking or patio space? – if you are creating a patio or decking area, you’ll need to consider material choices and spacing.

What to do with the flowerbeds – flowerbeds with attractive flowers and foliage need a huge amount of attention through the year, but they are a showstopper when done well. Decide on how big you want to go with them, and likewise consider the addition of any hedges of trees you’d like to make in your zone layout.

To pergola, or not to pergola – the pergola is a modern-day landscaping favourite and a great complement to any decking area, hosting area or patio. Again, you’ll need to consider how a pergola fits in with your spacing if you want one.

Apply the finishing touches

Once you created and implemented that dream design, you’ll want to apply a few finishing touches. These include:

Painting any furniture or structures you’ve installed – think about using a colour and styling theme and stick to it through out

Investing in tools that are going to help you maintain the space like strimmers, lawn mowers, tree cutters, hedge trimmers and other basic gardening tools.

Professional help – if you’ve worked hard to create an amazing new garden but don’t have the time year-round to maintain it, what about getting a professional gardener/landscaper in to do the upkeep for you?
