The 5 Things Your Home Gym is Missing

With the busy lifestyle so many of us are leading this days, having an in-home gym can be incredibly convenient. Instead of fighting gridlock traffic, finding childcare for your kids, and then sweating in a room full of other strangers, more and more people are opting to work out at home. But in order to have the best workout you can, it's important that your home gym has the right equipment to serve your needs.

Exercise mats

Obviously you're working out because you want to make your body stronger and healthier, but exercise can also have negative consequences if you're not protecting your body well. For example, high-intensity interval training (HIIT) is a popular exercise for those who want to push their limits or don't have much time for exercise, but without the right protection it can be dangerous for your joints. Fortunately, easy fixes like putting down thick foam exercise mats that absorb some of the shock can protect your knees. They'll also protect your weights from getting dinged on the concrete, if that's a concern.

Inspiration

Sometimes when you're not feeling up to really pushing yourself, it can help to switch on a private personal trainer of sorts. There are plenty of websites with free exercise videos made by professional, certified personal trainers. Many of these personal trainers, like the husband and wife team at Fitness Blender have a wide variety of training styles, so you can find something to suit whatever feels good that day. Just make sure you have a spot in your gym for a screen. If you don't want to put in a television, maybe you can just find a place to prop up your phone or tablet.

Equipment

The equipment you choose will vary widely depending on what kind of exercise you prefer. If you're into strength training, you'll want a full rack of weights or a set of adjustable dumbbells. If you really enjoy cardio, think about investing in something like a stationary bike or a treadmill. But don't worry about the price tag, you can find low-cost options if you need them. Buy a jump rope for cardio workouts if you're still saving up for a treadmill, or fill milk jugs with water to replace weights if you don't have the cash for a set of dumbbells yet.

Apparel

It's tempting to exercise in your rattiest pajamas when you're working out at home, but trust us--it's worth it to invest in some athleisure clothes. Good quality workout clothes are designed for intense exercise. They'll help your sweat dry more quickly and promote ventilation to keep you cool, and some even feature compression fabric in places to keep your blood flowing well. Having a cute wardrobe to get dressed up in might also be a good motivator to get yourself into your gym. Plus, we all know that workout clothes are a great go-to for errand day.

You

You could spend thousands on your home gym and have the best-equipped exercise space in the neighborhood and it won't do you any good unless you make it in there regularly. Perhaps the most important thing to think about in setting up your home gym is to make it a space you look forward to spending time in. Decorate it in a way that makes you smile, choose an air freshener that helps you relax, design it in a room with a great view, or do whatever it takes to make your gym a place you look forward to visiting. Hey, you can even stick a TV in there and binge on reality shows while you sweat. We won't tell.
