Unwanted water in your house from any sources – whether it’s from a leak, a damaged pipe or even a flood – can cause a big problem for your home if not dealt properly. The longer you wait the more extensive the damage and expensive the repair bills will be. If you have water damage in your home, you’re going to have to act quickly to fix the problem. Here are some tips to help you get your situation under control and prevent a much more complicated problem in the future.

  1. 1.You need to act fast. The moment you notice that there is a problem, look into it in detail. See if it’s something that needs immediate action. If it’s something that can’t wait, there are 24-hour emergency services to help you cover the problem. Calling these experts  as soon as you notice a problem will mostly be an efficient way to minimize water damage to your home. To prevent mold growth, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recommends drying out damp or wet areas within 24 to 48 hours.
  1. 2.Be Careful. If it’s already a large problem when you became aware of it, there are a few steps you should take. If there’s a flood going on, turn off your electricity to avoid any form of electrocution. Next, don’t use regular household appliances to remove the water, there are proper tools that is used to remove them. Sewer water should be avoided if you were able to determine the source of the water, leave your home or avoid the area to prevent getting ill. And lastly, if it’s a leak or a pipe, determine the source and turn off the water to prevent further damage.
  1. 3.Be very keen on small details. Flood, burst pipes and leaks are hard to ignore since they’re pretty much obvious. But there are some sources that are very subtle and can be easy to miss. To prevent a start of a water damage, regularly inspect your home for leaks, especially in the bathroom, kitchen and the basement. A moldy spot or a damp one can be start of a big problem. You should also look into soft spot in your walls, it could also be a sign of an already ongoing problem.
  1. 4.Remove water immediately. Removing the source and closing it in, if you can, will stop the flow of water. With this done, you can now remove the water with your own tool or even manually. Once water is removed, dry it out with a fan or a dehumidifier, this will make the drying faster so you can do your work on the source of the water. If it’s something that can’t be stopped, I suggest hiring a professional to extract the water out of your home.

5. Dry out any valuables. Your valuables are also important, not just your home If you have some things that were already affected by the damage, dry them immediately. Of course, those valuables that are not affected yet, take them as far away from the source as possible. Some valuables can still be salvaged and repaired by hiring a professional service.
