What to Do When the Photo Eye of Your Garage Door Is Malfunctioning

Written by Posted On Tuesday, 31 October 2017 02:09

The photo eye is a safety feature on your garage door. It prevents your door from closing when there is something in the path. The photo eye has two sensors on either side of the door 6 inches off the ground. One sensor sends a laser beam to the other, and if the signal is interrupted, the door won’t close. If your photo eye is not working as it should, here are some quick fixes that you can try before asking help from a garage door service technician.
• Make sure nothing is caught between the sensors. If there is something like a leaf or scrap of paper blocking the sensor, the beam might be interrupted and your door won’t operate properly.
• Clean both sensors thoroughly with a damp cloth. The issue might be your sensors being dirty. Wipe the units gently, then dry using a dry cloth.
• Make sure the two photo eyes are aiming at each other. Most sensors have indicator lights acting as a notification system. If one of the sensors is blinking, then the problem is on that particular sensor. Make small adjustments to get both sensors pointing straight towards each other.
