How to make your own play-dough at home!

Written by Posted On Monday, 06 November 2017 11:39

At all of the Teddy Kids international daycares in the Netherlands, play-dough is one of our favourite toys in the group. Always wondered how to make this multifunctional toy at home? Read on for our latest lifehack for kids.  Incredibly easy to make, this play-dough guarantees weeks of fun (depending on how you store it, it can really last weeks!). It only takes a couple of minutes to make and you don’t even have to cook or dirty any pans or pots! For kids party ideas, kids activities or just because, it’s cheap and easy to make your own play-dou, so why wouldn’t you?

Incredibly easy to make, this play-dough guarantees weeks of fun (depending on how you store it, it can really last weeks!). It only takes a couple of minutes to make and you don’t even have to cook or dirty any pans or pots! For kids party ideas, kids activities or just because, it’s cheap and easy to make your own play-dough, so why wouldn’t you?

The ingredients:

1 cup flour + some extra flour for kneading

    1/2 cup salt

2 tbsp. cream of tartar (can be bought in the Netherland through various online stores or in most wholesale places)

1 tbsp. olive or other plant oil

    1 cup boiling water

    Food colouring

Combine the flour, cream of tartar, oil and salt in a bowl and set aside. Boil the water, take it off the heat and stir in the food dye until mixed well. Add the water to the bowl with the rest of the ingredients and stir until combined. Leave to cool for a minute (but not entirely cooled!). Throw a bit of flour on the kitchen top and take the dough out of the bowl. Knead the dough on the flour bottom until you have reached the desired texture. Leave to cool entirely and it’s ready to be played with! When you’re not playing, store in an airtight container to ensure freshness.

The play-dough will stay fresh for a few weeks, after which it tends to get a little sticky. That’s the time to make a fresh batch! It stays fresh longer if you take it out of its container every couple of days to play with and air out. If the dough gets a little soft or sticky, you can also knead in a bit more flour. This way, kids can play with the same toys at home as they do here at Teddy Kids international daycares. Have fun!

Why you allow your kids to play with Play-Dough:

Squishing, squeezing, stretching and moulding play dough helps to build muscle strength in the fingers and hands. This in turn makes it easier to complete fine motor activities like holding a pencil and cutting with scissors later on. Providing small items like buttons, sequins, pasta, pebbles and shells with the play dough will also encourage children to use their fine motor skills when picking up and placing these objects into their play dough creations. It’s a great idea to put out some shape cutters, a grater, blunt plastic knives and tweezers which can all be used to mould and transform the play dough.
