What is that Black Residue on My Garage Door?

Written by Posted On Tuesday, 28 November 2017 01:33

The black residue that you often see accumulating on the edges or on the exterior of your garage door is powdered graphite. This is usually used as an alternate form of lubricant. Recently purchased doors are usually lubricated before or after installment, and the black residue that stays is usually graphite.
While graphite is generally safe on the metal components of your door, it can get messy at times. After some time of getting your door installed by a local garage door service company, you might consider using white lithium grease or any kind of garage door lubricant from the hardware store.
In certain cases, however, the black residue may be molds. Molds grow and reproduce in areas with heat and moisture, and it is not unusual to find them on your door. If you regularly get garage door maintenance, you should not worry about this being the case
