Headroom Requirement for a Sectional Garage Door

Written by Posted On Thursday, 21 December 2017 00:22

When planning for a new overhead garage door, some tend to forget about the minimum headroom requirement. Before you replace an existing door, you have to measure the top of the doorframe to the nearest obstruction. It could be any object hanging down from the ceiling like a pipe or a beam. Proper amount of headroom is important because it allows the door to move around without hitting any object below the ceiling level or the ceiling itself. It is ideal to leave 18” of headroom space because any door can be installed without any difficulty with 18” headroom. However, there are still minimum requirements if you do not have 18” headroom.

For the torsion spring system, the minimum for a standard track manual operation is 12”. For the standard track with garage door opener, it’s 15”. For low headroom track manual operation, it’s 9”. For low headroom track with garage door opener, it’s 12”.

The requirement for the extension spring system is different. It’s 6” for standard track manual operation, 9” for standard with garage door opener, 5” for low headroom track manual operation and 12” for low headroom with garage door opener.
