Extension Springs vs. Torsion Springs for Your Garage Door

Written by Posted On Thursday, 21 December 2017 00:44

The extension springs have been the most commonly used springs on garage doors for years. However, torsion springs are now becoming more popular as they are featured on most double automated doors. Additionally, torsion springs are a more refined and elegant kind of garage door spring. If you are deciding on which spring type to use for your equipment, here are reasons why torsion springs might be a better investment.

• Torsion springs are more durable. Torsion springs are more expensive than extension springs. However, torsion springs typically last 15,000-20,000 cycles, while extension springs last only up to 10,000 cycles. For a garage door that opens 4 times a day, extension springs will last approximately 7 years, while torsion springs will last 10-13 years.
• Extension springs require more parts. When a garage door involves more parts, more things can go wrong. Extension springs require a longer cable and have more components than torsion springs. Torsion springs can be easily lubricated and maintained, while the additional parts needed with extension springs can be worn-out and cause problems.

If your door is currently using extension springs, a garage door service expert can help you with converting them to torsion springs.
