Guide to use roof jacks

Written by Posted On Wednesday, 28 February 2018 04:23

Working on flat surfaces sounds like a normal thing. But when it comes to steep slopes people do think twice before going for it. Now, if you have a steep roof the question of how work is to be done if a minor issue takes place on the roof. Along with being steep the roof has the issue of height which scares a lot of people and they hire a professional for even small tasks. While working on the roof either you need to have excellent balance or have a roof jack with knowledge of how to work using this jack. Here is a guide to help you get familiar.

Attachment:

The first step is to find an ideal place to place the roof jack. The roof jack is a means to provide you safety when you are to work on roof that is steep. When you locate the place which is normally below the sheathing (where you can feel the nails) attach the jack with the roof by using two 16d nails into the rafter. It should be noted that the nails shouldn’t be the roofing nails.

Securing Plank:

After the attachment of the rafter the plank is to be put in place. The plank provides the surface area for you to stand and since this is flat it provides you the stability you need to work on the roof. The size of the plank can be 2x8 inch or 2x10 inch. This is a suitable size since the plank can fit the jack nicely. The plank should be placed in a way that each side must get almost 6 inches of the plank so that balance is present and chances of toppling become zero. The plank should be secured by drilling a nail between the jack and the plank so that the chances of plank tipping over become non-existent.

Removing Jack:

After you are done with your work removal of jack is to be done. The jack should be detached from the nails tap up with the help of a hammer. The nail should be driven so that it doesn’t poke through the roofing material. To do this a flat pry bar should be placed under the shingle and above the nailhead and then the nail is driven. In the case that the tab is flexible it can be lifted while nailing.

Combination of roof jacks and ladder:

The jack will only provide you stability but to make every height of the roof easily accessible you can combine the jack with a ladder and you can then get to any part to work easily. The ladder should be placed on the plank. Make sure that the ladder doesn’t slip from the plank since that will cause serious damage.

Stability is an important factor whenever amends are considered. So to do the work safely always use roof jacks. But in the case you fear that the fixing might be difficult for you, you can always contact roofing contractors Ann Arbor and they will be happy to help.
