5 Simple tricks to make your home look elegant

Written by Posted On Sunday, 01 April 2018 21:46

Creating an elegant-looking home isn’t always easy, especially when you’re on a tight budget. However, there are ways you can make your home look more expensive just by using the right colours and styling.

With these simple tips and tricks, you can transform the look of your home without having to splash the cash.

1) Invest in soft furnishings

Giving a lounge room an elegant makeover can be difficult when you don’t have a lot of money to spend, but an easy way to do this is with soft furnishings. Investing in a few pieces can breathe new life into the room, transforming existing furniture, and adding a touch of class.

Don’t be afraid to go a little bold here and choose pieces with contrasting textures and colours to create a luxury feel. Of course, even new pillows can set you back a pretty penny, so it’s worth using a few tricks to cut back on your spending.

Try heading to your local fabric shop and see if they’re selling any scraps at a discount, large enough to make a few pillowcases. You can then either sew these yourself or find a local tailor to do so. Pair these with some affordable feather inserts, and you’ve got yourself an entirely new look, for less.

2) Use lights to your advantage

Lighting is often overlooked, but it can actually have a much bigger impact than most people realise. By adjusting the lighting in a room, you can instantly change the mood, and even create a more luxurious feel.

The trick is to have a variety of lighting sources in the room to help create depth. The best part is that you don’t need to spend a great deal of money to achieve this look. You can source inexpensive lamps second hand and give them a makeover by purchasing a new lampshade.

You can also install dimmer switches, which is surprisingly cheap and easy to do. They allow you to quickly adjust the lighting to create a relaxing, cosy, and luxurious atmosphere.

3) Try marble accessories

A high-end material like marble can instantly make your home look more elegant. Of course, not many of us can afford an all-marble kitchen countertop or marble tiles all over our bathroom.

To still get the look without spending a small fortune, try finding smaller, more affordable pieces. Since marble is trending at the moment, it shouldn’t be difficult to find marble accessories at an affordable price. Think a table lamp with a marble base, a marble clock, or marble top side table.

If real marble is too far out of your price range, don’t be afraid to choose a marble effect piece instead. It’s an easy way to achieve a timeless look with a hint of luxury, without spending too much money.

4) Choose expensive-looking paint

While choosing which paint colours to use in your home is in large part down to personal preference, if you’re after a luxurious look, then be careful about the colours you go for. Certain colours can instantly make your home look more elegant, while others will have the opposite effect.

You can either go for classic, understated hues or be dramatic and bold in your choices. Either choice can help to create an elegant look, but which one you choose will come down to your personality.

Another simple trick to make a room look more expensive is to paint everything the same colour. This works particularly well in the kitchen, but you can also try it in your living room by painting all the walls, and even ceiling, the same colour. Don’t forget the furniture; not only will this look more expensive, but it will also make a space look bigger.

5) Declutter and simplify

If your home is over-accessorised and full of clutter, then it can easily end up looking like a disorganised mess, rather than an elegant haven. So, if there’s a bit too much going on at the moment, it may be time for a spring clean.

Give everyday objects a home so they can easily be put away and hidden from view. This will also make it easier to keep your home clean, which already goes a long way in making it feel more high-end.

Pare things down and try just to keep the pieces that have sentimental value. By simplifying your styling, you can give these objects the opportunity to really stand out and shine. Best of all? With this tip, you don’t have to spend any money!
