Selling Your Home? Don’t Let Allergens Scare Off Potential Buyers

Written by Posted On Tuesday, 05 June 2018 05:10

Home buying is already very subjective — someone might give your house a ‘thumbs down’ simply because of the paint color. However, there is another factor that you may not even realize might make you lose out on an offer: allergens. Even if you don’t struggle with seasonal allergies, many do. You don’t want people leaving your open house unenthused for this reason.

Allergies are nothing new. In fact, some states especially suffer from the seasonal variety while others more commonly deal with those related to food or pets. Luckily for you, this means that years have been spent figuring out ways to combat the effects of various allergens. Don’t discount the need to address these before potential buyers visit your home.

Pets

Many people love the company of dogs or cats, but some are severely allergic. In addition to relocating your pet (if you have one) during the open house, you’ll want it to appear as if a pet were never there. Make sure to sweep meticulously, even under the carpets. You’ll also want to do a thorough clean of your furniture to make sure pet dander isn’t stuck within it. For extra safe measure, you can use staging furniture that hasn’t been touched by any pets.

Dust Mites & Pollen

These are the seasonal allergens that many people deal with year after year. To avoid any issues with these, you’ll want to shampoo your carpet in addition to vacuuming it. Oftentimes, the vacuum won’t get everything. You’ll also want to wash any bedding or cloth decor (i.e. curtains) in warm water to kill off any dust mites.

Food

This is the least likely allergen to affect visitors, but it’s still something to keep in mind. If you plan to have cookies or other treats at your open house, avoid nuts, soy, and even dairy if you can. Again, the home buying experience is very subjective. Even if a negative experience isn’t directly linked to the amenities of your house for sale, buyers may still look elsewhere if they weren’t pleased with their visit. There are so many steps to take when selling a home — don’t let something simple keep you from getting a great offer!
