Catching a Plumbing Problem Before it Explodes

Written by Posted On Tuesday, 31 July 2018 22:18

While summer temperatures are still soaring, no homeowner wants to think about winter and all the ice, snow and potential damage to homes that often comes with the cold season. Yet, with winter weather predictions already in for the 2018-2019, the colder months will be here before we know it. The summer or early fall, before the first snowfall, is one of the best times to prepare your home for winter. It is always less stressful and less expensive to be prepared by preventing problems than having to respond to emergency situations.

A company familiar with cold Boston winters, New England Pipe Restoration, advises that homeowners take the proper steps to prepare for the colder months by properly winterizing their home. Some general preparation measures include storing away summer lawn tools, wrapping windows in a protective layer of plastic to keep the cold drafts out, changing the furnace filter, cleaning out the gutters, turning down the water heater and the thermostat temperatures, sealing air ducts, and installing storm windows and doors. Besides for protecting your home, many of these steps will also help you save money on energy costs which can skyrocket in the colder months especially if there are leaks and drafts allowing the warm air to escape.

In addition, another essential task that should be checked off your home winterizing list is having the pipes inspected with a sewer camera to make sure they are clear and clean. This method is often used in plumbing repairs but is also used to winterize pipes and head off a problem before it explodes, literally, and becomes an expensive emergency situation.

The sewer pipe inspection involves sending a small waterproof video camera inside the sewer pipe via one or two small access holes to the pipe connections. The camera then provides an invaluable look at the inside of the pipes by displaying the results on a monitor. The results are then analyzed helping to provide an accurate view of the current pipe situation and helping to prevent future problems such as clogs, cracks, and leaks. Discovering these problems when they are still small will ensure that they get fixed easily and that the sewer pipes remain in good working condition throughout the winter.

While all plumbing emergencies are unable to be prevented, many plumbing issues can be identified early on while they are still developing. Taking the time and effort to prepare your home early on for winter will save you money, time and headaches later on, and will allow you to enjoy the winter with peace of mind.
