As upsetting as it is to find rat droppings in your home, you need to take a few precautionary measures before cleaning to ensure:

1. that you don't become infected (rat droppings are hazardous to humans)
2. there are no other rats in the immediate surrounding - rats are social creatures and tend to move in packs, so when you find one, there's always the possibility that there's another closeby.

Precautionary Measures To Take Before Cleaning
● Use traps on the rodents, and ensure that there are no exits (or entryways for more to come in). They should be trapped for at least a week. If you don't find any other rodent during this time frame, then there should not be any additional rodents in your home.
● Cross ventilate the affected area for at least 30 minutes to prevent toxins in the atmostphere before you start cleaning.
● You'll need to use protective gear - anything from latex or rubber gloves to face masks will do. You want to minimize every possible contact with their faeces and urine.
● Under no circumstance should you attempt to vacuum an area with rat droppings - this will only stir up dust (with rat droppings).

● Once you have your gear on, spray the affected area with either a disinfectant or a homemade diluted solution (even bleach should do - for every 10 oz of liquid, 1 oz should be bleach). Let the disinfectant sit for about 5 minutes.
● Next, you'll want to pick up the sprayed droppings with a disposable towel, then throw them into a new waste bag.
● Since this happened in your home, and rats have no respect for property, disinfect other items and furnishings that have rat droppings.
● Now you can mop the affected areas, steam clean carpets, launder all beddings (use the hot setting on your washing machine).
● When you're done, carefully take off the protective gear you used and dispose them in the waste bag, then thoroughly wash your hands with water and soap (or a hand sanitizer if the gloves were effective and you weren't soiled at all).

Cleaning Up Rat Urine & Droppings In Heavily Infested Areas
These include homes that have been abandoned, or places that have attracted a large number of rat dwellings. Bio helpers are usually necessary for these places to become habitable - especially if the structures have been known to habor rodents with hantavirus. Bio Helpers suggest researching beyond a do-it-yourself website to ensure hygiene and safety precautions are exercised to the fullest. .

Wrapping It Up
Hantavirus from rodent droppings can stay infectuous for a maximum of 3 days. Hence it's important that you take all precautionary measures when cleaning up rat droppings. You'll want to make sure you're well protected in your protective garb, and that the area is well ventilated before you start cleaning up rat droppings. If you feel the task is beyond you, don't hesitate to ask for outside help.
