What most people see are granite slabs, as they're used in making floors, countertops and other parts of the home. As aesthetically pleasing as granite slabs are, they're also expensive. This is why the value of your home will usually increase after installing granite in some parts of your house. However, the cost of granite will usually be tied to its grade or quality. Here's how to check the quality of granite you will be purchasing for your home.

How to Check the Quality of Granite

1. There shouldn't be any disparity in color or any other characteristic. The whole surface needs to be similar in thickness, color and texture.

2. It should be very hard and dense. To test this quality, you can just press a really hard object to the granite slab. If it chips away, then the quality of the granite is questionable.

3. The granite slabs should all be evenly square or rectangular - as needed. The width, length and thickness tolerance of the slab shouldn't exceed 15% of the slab' s thickness. During construction, the required thickness is between 15 to 20 mm. So calculate other dimensions to be certain the granite slab is construction grade.

4. It shouldn't leave any water marks behind, like you'd find on wood after the condensation from a glass of water has sat on it. Also, when struck, the slab should make a very clear ringing sound that echoes.

5. There should be no dents, dings,or uneven surfaces. Check to make sure it was either machine or hand cut and polished - check how straight and at perfect angles the edges are. To check the polish quality, scrape the slab with a penny. A quality polish won't be affected by the penny, so you shouldn't see any scratches.

6. This is obvious, but make sure the diagonal of each slab is equal in length. Use a measuring tape if you have to. Obviously, if you'd followed the third instruction - with regards to the squareness of the slab - you won't need to verify the diagonal length.

7. Aside from polish test, you need to check the quality of the color. Artificial colors can usually be detected by rubbing a cloth - which has been dipped into petrol or kerosene - and rubbing it over the surface of the granite slab. If the cloth changes color, then artificial coloring was used and the granite should be rejected.

8. If the granite slab will be used in making a kitchen countertop, you'll need to check that it isn't porous. Drop a few droplets of lemon juice, if it gets soaked in, reject the granite. If it stays on the surface but the slab changes color, then that granite is high in calcite and should be rejected.

In Conclusion

Do you know how to check the quality of granite? While all of these can be used to check granite quality, you can also send a sample of the granite to a lab for testing. Most testings done are usually more broad and accurate than the home test you'll be doing yourself.
