YOUR WHY

Written by Posted On Monday, 19 November 2018 18:06

A lot of people ask me if they should begin investing in real estate, and if so, what area of real estate they should explore first. My answer is almost always exactly the same: it really depends on what you want from your life. Ultimately, no matter what you do, to be successful in life you generally cannot live by accident, but must live with purpose. In that, before intelligently deciding which direction you should go, you have to know where it is you want to end up. In other words, before moving forward, you have to define your “Why”.

Your why is what gets you out of bed in the morning. Your why is what gets you to pick up the phone and make another call. Your why is why the hell you do what it is you do. And without a genuine why, without a purpose, it makes it very difficult to have a true north with which to base your decisions off of. To have a true north is to have a direction to weigh all of your decisions against, not just in a macro since, but in a micro day to day, hour to hour since. When a new challenge arises or a new option presents itself, a true north gives you the ability to ask yourself, “Does this help take me directly towards my goal?” This way you can more easily decide if every action you take is moving you directly towards your goal (directly “North”), or in another direction all together.

So what is it that you want, and why do you want it? Maybe its security you seek? Or maybe it’s more freedom? If your main concern at this point is annual income, then maybe it’s best that you explore getting into rehabs and new builds. That being said, maybe right now you don’t have a lot of capitol, or your risk tolerance isn’t very high, so maybe bird dogging or wholesaling is more up your alley. Or maybe you’re ready to start building passive income for yourself, and in that, it’s time for you to look into owning rental properties. The point is, without knowing where you want your life to take you, it’s hard to hone in on the investment technique that is right for you, and that’s not just as it pertains to real estate, but to any investment technique!

So how do you go about figuring out your why? Well, by taking the time to sit down and think it through, of course! Put a paper and pen to it, look into yourself and come up with some S.M.A.R.T. (specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, time sensitive) goals and commit yourself to their manifestation! If you feel you need some inspiration, reading is always an amazing source. Start with Think and Grow Ritch (Napoleon Hill), Unlimited Power (Tony Robbins), Rich Dad Poor Dad (Robert Kiyosaki), and Start With Why (Simon Sinek), and if they aren’t enough, keep reading! It’s up to nobody but you to figure out what you want from life and from the universe, and to go out there and take it!

Are these all of the aspects that need to be considered when finding your why and your purpose? Of course not, but they should get you pointed in the right direction.
