How to Clean Upholstered Headboard - Five Types of Solutions

Upholstered headboards come in various types of materials. With this in mind, here is a guideline on how to clean each headboard based on its material:

1. Cleaning Wool Headboards

Wool, which is primarily a natural fabric, is blended with synthetic fibers which make the cleaning work a walk in the park. Unusually, the most effective way of cleaning woolen headboards is through steam cleaning since they retain water which renders any wet cleaning option difficult.

2. Cleaning Velvet Headboards

If your board has a liquid stain, soak the board with a dry white cloth or paper towel. Like you would wash linen, mix water and a mild detergent and use the foam to blot the stain gently. Alternatively, you can use a mixture of lemon juice and baking powder for a foamy texture.

When cleaning, be sure not to rub, but clean through vertical movements. Finally, blot the foam with a dry piece of cloth and then use a hairdryer to dry the cleaned area faster.

3. Cleaning Linen Headboards

Similar to wool, linen also falls into the natural fabric category. When cleaning this fabric, start by vacuuming it thoroughly to get rid of any dust. If it has fresh stains, be sure not to rub, but blot it with a white cloth. Use a mild soap to clean it with a white cloth carefully dipped in the water. Alternatively, you can steam clean it using a vacuum cleaner. Ensure that you open the doors and windows until your headboard is completely dry to prevent any mold growth.

4. Cleaning Leather Headboards

While it is advised that you first read the manufacturer’s instructions on how to clean your leather upholstered headboard, here is the most familiar cleaning method:

Vacuum the headboard by using a soft brush to get rid of hair and dust. If it has grime and dirt, take a little bit of water and moisturizing soap to clean the spot.

NOTE: Ensure that the cloth you use is not drenched but slightly damp to avoid making the area too wet.

Alternatively, you can mix a solution of distilled water and white vinegar (50:50) ratio for a cleaning agent and scrub the spot gently.

Finally, use a soft dry cloth to buff the leather and then polish.

5. Cleaning Suede Headboards

Suede is an open-texture soft fabric, a feature that makes it more susceptible to dust, stain, and dirt accumulation. To clean it, first use your vacuum cleaner’s upholstery brush to get rid of any debris, hair, or dust. Then, use a brush that attaches to your vacuum cleaner that is meant for suede and brush in circular motions. Follow this by mixing a mild detergent with water in a bucket and create suds, which you will then apply to the headboard using a white cloth. Gently blot the stains and if necessary, repeat the process. Finally, dry the area using a dry (white) material.

NOTE: Different suede upholsteries react differently to varied cleaning agents, and as such, it is vital to perform a spot test before you start on the cleaning.

Next Steps

Depending on the type of material is on your upholstered headboard, you’ll need to use different cleaning methods on each of them to ensure the best results. So, don’t know how to clean upholstered headboard? That’s okay.
