The Importance of a Using Deep Cycle Battery Charger - Home Garage Tips from Expert

For people who just own a vehicle powered by a deep cycle battery and couldn’t care less about the technical stuff just know that their vehicle is running on what is known as a deep cycle battery.

They don’t know the significance of using that type of battery and thus, they don’t know how to properly charge it when the inevitable time of recharging comes. Here’s a heads up for people who’re new to this or people who don’t—but should—care.

What are Deep Cycle Batteries?

Deep cycle batteries are unique types of batteries designed to deliver a steady and constant electrical charge. Mostly used for solar electric purposes or backup power, they can be found in golf carts and RVs, among others. It’s called deep cycle because of this particular type of battery cycles deeper than most. To further elaborate, let’s talk about cycles and lifespan of batteries. A battery’s lifespan is how many cycles it can go through.

A cycle is a cycle of discharging and recharging. Basically, you go through one cycle when the energy inside a battery is discharged and then recharged. Discharging a battery can go anywhere from 5% to 80% discharge, so this means a battery can be discharged to just 20% of its capacity. Anyway, most batteries are not recommended to be discharged to even 50%, whereas deep cycle batteries are actually recommended to be discharged to close to that level and then fully recharged.

Their cycle is deeper and thus their title. Now that the meaning behind the name’s over, let’s talk about using a deep cycle battery charger.

Functionality and Features of Deep Cycle Batteries

As mentioned before, since a deep cycle battery has unique use, functionality, and hence features, you should best use only a deep cycle battery charger for charging one. Don’t settle for generic battery chargers—batteries can be seriously dangerous as to take lives when handled (and yes, recharged) improperly.

The substances and materials that make up a battery are corrosive, explosive, and highly reactant. You can scald your self or your immediate surroundings or blow yourself up if you don’t take good care. Battery electrolyte mixed with salt water would exude chorine gas, a lethal gas if inhaled.

Other toxic gases could form in small amounts, and when they concentrate on a single point they could cause you a lot of pain in more ways than you think.

The process for charging the deep cycle battery is in itself a simple undertaking. No necessary special instructions need to be followed—aside from using deep cycle battery chargers and reading the manual for both battery and charger as different manufacturers have different ideas on how batteries and chargers should work.

It is recommended to let your deep cycle battery slow charge for 10 to 12 hours but no more than that, because most places that sell rechargers, even deep cycle battery rechargers, sell only chargers that you need to watch over on your own.

They don’t regulate the voltage being passed onto batteries and thus overcharging can cause extreme setbacks.
