Here’s What You Must Do To Lower Your Electricity Bill

Written by Posted On Sunday, 24 February 2019 22:54

Busy households are using an increasing amount of electricity. We like our homes to be warm, we use technology and we have multiple rooms and multiple bathrooms. If you want to make lower your electric bill it is important therefore to have everyone on board as all of the small changes add to make an impact on the final bill.

Encourage everyone to switch the lights off as they leave a room, could you change to energy efficient light bulbs and use dimmer switches?

Technology should not be left on standby, often multiple devices are left on standby for long periods of time. Switch off instead,

Showers and baths can expensive! Teens often enjoy long power showers and people are having multiple showers every day. Try to encourage your family to reduce the time spent in the shower.

When washing clothes, make sure that there is a reasonable load and not just a few items. Wash at the lowest temperature possible and air dry clothes instead of using the tumble dryer. Take advantage of dry weather to hang your clothes on the line.

Cook smart. Use glass and ceramic and put the lids on the pots. Use the right size ring for the size of pot and cook in larger amounts. Defrost items before cooking to save on cooking time.

Top up electric heating appliances can be expensive, by making sure that your house is properly insulated, if insulation is lacking from your home, you could be losing a lot of your heat through your roof or the walls of your home. Often grants are available to allow homeowners to insulate their home, it may be worth checking. Turning the heating down even by just a notch can make a big difference.

Old appliances use much more electricity compared with their newer counterparts. Maintain appliances to keep them running efficiently and replace old models with the newer energy efficient models.

A full freezer uses less energy compared with an empty one as the food provides insulation.

Have you thought about speaking with your energy provider to check that you are on their best tariff. Some of the online tariff’s offer better value and if you agree to certain payment methods, your supplier may agree to lower your tariff. If you are on a contract with your supplier, it makes sense to check pricing with other suppliers at the end of the term. Watch out for exit penalties, not all suppliers have exit penalties but some do and if you leave before your contracted time, you may face a cost.

It is also worth checking that your supplier is provided with up to date meter readings as an overestimated bill would mean that you are paying too much in advance and an underestimated bill would leave you in a position where you would have to find a larger sum of money when the matter was corrected.

Everyone can do their bit to help and small changes can definitely impact on the size of your bill.
