Why Your Air Ducts Should Be Professionally Cleaned

Written by Posted On Tuesday, 26 March 2019 07:07

Air quality can have a major effect on the health of your family. Poor air quality can cause diseases and other respiratory illnesses. Your air ducts, which distribute the air throughout the house, get dirty as time goes one. Sometimes the amount of dirt can get up to forty pounds, every year. This air contaminates the home, and will only get worse if left unchecked. That is why cleaning your air ducts is so important. The air you breathe should be as clean as possible. Here are some of the drawbacks of dirty air ducts.

Health

There are many health conditions that can result from dirty air being distributed throughout the home. For instance, asthma, depression, migraines, eye irritation, and skin problems can all be attributed to this. It is not just dirt and dust that collects in the ducts. Mold and other bacteria collect as well, and can cause you serious respiratory harm.

Mechanical Issues

A dirty duct system is also susceptible to having mechanical issues. Dirt settles on components of the system, such as the cooling coils. Once these components are coated, then the coils will not be able to properly cool the air, which can cause strain on the motor unit. At some point, the more work the blower has to do, the more likely a failure becomes.

How It Gets Dirty

Dust and other particles get sucked into the air handler, and get into the duct system. As they flow through, they settle in certain areas, such as bends and curves, and on some components of the system. It will also get blown through the registers and into the house.

How It Gets Clean

A professional HVAC service will first use cameras to check out the situation and see where the trouble spots are. Then they will hook up a large vacuum to the register. At the same time, they will use specialized equipment to scrub the walls of the ducts. The debris will then be sucked into the vacuum. They will also use special products to clean and disinfect the coils and mechanical components.

It can be easy to forget about your ducts and the air that flows through them. We cannot see the air getting dirty, but over time we will certainly feel it in our lungs and in the way it affects our health.
