A house cleaners worst nightmare and a business owners biggest enemy. Mold may be necessary for decomposing trees and plants back into the environment and creating penicillin for medications; however, it is still a hazard and nuisance to have in the house. Some molds are known as “common” or “everyday” molds that we inhale and live with without even realizing it until it affects our health. If not cleaned up correctly or hastily, it can cause skin rashes, allergies, asthma attacks and infections. A big question about mold is how much does mold spread and how long do I have until it’s a big problem. Most likely, if you see it, it’s already a problem.

How Fast Does Mold Spread - Stop Mold Before it Grows

Pink Mold

Pink mold that is found in bathrooms, is actually a slimy bacteria that loves soap and shampoo. This mold takes about 72 hours to form in certain areas. As long as you are regularly cleaning your sinks, toilets, tubs and floors with the proper cleaner, you can prevent urinary tract infections, skin rashes and eye infections. Also, allow your bathroom to dry by either using a fan or leaving the door or window open after showering and cleaning.

Green and Black Mold

Although this mold can form in as little as 24 hours, black and green mold can be visible anywhere from 12 to 21 days! Sometimes this mold forms outside first from moisture in plants and soil then spreads to inside the house into carpets, drywall, humid rooms or even insulation. These types of molds can affect the skin, eyes, lungs and have been reported to cause worst medical problems such as bleeding lungs and memory loss especially for those who have weak immune systems.

Blue and White Mold

Just because blue mold has been used for antibiotics as it is a form of penicillin, does not mean it is meant to fester in your home.  Mold doesn’t just grow in warm, moist environments, it can feed off of salt and sugars as well. Any processed meats, jams or fruit can grow mold. If you find any mold on your food, it is best to throw it away to prevent chances of food poisoning, food allergies or even worst lung and sinus infections.

If you happen to find blue mold on your walls, it is probably spreading from somewhere inside the house such as air vents or insulation. Upon finding this or any mold, it is best to contact a specialist to see where the origin is and have it removed ASAP.

How fast does mold spread? While most mold may not be visible for almost a month, it only takes about 1 - 2 days to make contact and germinate. Understand that you do not need to know what kind of mold you have in order to get rid of it. Any mold that you find in your house needs to be cleaned and remove to prevent some significant illnesses. The CDC recommends to clean mold on surfaces like walls, counters and metals with a solution made up of 1 gallon of hot water and no more than 1 cup of bleach.
