Reasons Why Your Home Build Site Could Be Inspected

Have you been visited by a safety and health officer for a workplace inspection and wondered why? Workplace inspections are done in order to make sure job sites are safe and following all relevant guideline.

But what triggers a workplace inspection? We’ve outlined the six most common reasons for a health and safety workplace inspection.

Reasons for a Workplace Inspection

Workplace inspections are triggered by a number of things, whether it’s a random inspection or a targeted one due to a complaint. Below are the six most common reasons why a workplace is visited by an inspector.

  1. 1.Situations of Imminent Danger

Imminent danger is defined as “a workplace hazard that puts you at immediate serious risk of death or serious physical harm”. These types of serious situations receive top priority for workplace inspections. Make sure all your employees are following proper health and safety guidelines. If they’re not, or you’re putting them in an unsafe position, expect a visit from an inspector. The site manager will be asked to correct hazards immediately or remove workers from the potentially harmful environment immediately, which could slow down a build.

  1. 2.Cases of Severe Injuries or Illness

All employers are required to report any cases of serious injuries or illness to the ministry. Any fatalities or critical injuries must be reported, even if they are not workers, in writing within 48 hours. Small injuries on a home build are common, but make sure workers are taking every precaution to avoid them. That means wearing helmets, gloves, and proper shoes.

  1. 3.Worker Complaints about Health and Safety

Employees have the option and are encouraged to report any health and safety hazards or other violations taking place at their work. Employees have the right to a safe workplace. If workers feel their safety is at risk, make sure you’re addressing that before they report you.

  1. 4.Other Agency Referrals

Other agencies or groups can also submit referrals for the ministry to consider inspection of a workplace. Federal, provincial, or local agencies, as well as an individual, an organization or the media, can report workplace hazards.

  1. 5.Targeted Inspections for Hazardous Industries

Certain industries are considered to be more hazardous and are therefore intentionally targeted for inspections, such as construction and home building. There are more safety risks associated with building, so if your job site was inspected there is a chance it was random. Always make sure you’re following proper guidelines so that you can pass inspections with ease.

  1. 6.Follow-Up Inspection

If a job site was cited for any violations on their previous inspections expect a follow-up visit. Follow up inspections are done to ensure the original violation has been corrected, and to make sure the build site is maintaining safety standards.

Have More Questions about Workplace Inspections?

It is always recommended to have a safe and healthy workplace regardless of the chances of an inspection. During home building, it can be tempting to take short cuts or push workers into unsafe situations in order to meet deadlines. Make sure you’re maintaining a safe job site though. A failed inspection will result in even more of a delay. If you’re unsure of workplace safety standards make sure to get health and safety advice. It’s the best way to protect your business and workers.
