If you are someone who enjoys trying your hand at new things, then tiling is something that you could certainly try. In a previous blog post I explained that I found it difficult to source one. As a result I tried my hand at it and the following are just some tips that I found were a great help.

1) Make A Plan And A List Of What You Need
To save time and money, one of the best steps to take is to set out a plan for what you need. If you have never tiled before you are going to need tools. I mentioned before in a blog post on the tilers toolkit, I outlined from advice I received before that you are going to need:

-  A tile cutter (get a good quality tile cutter, see here for the best tile cutters)

- Tile nippers

- A notched trowel

- A silicon gun

- Measuring tape

Look online or in your local hardware store to find the best prices on tiling equipment.

2) Set Your Budget
It is easy to get carried away when it comes to home renovations and improvements. You need to know what you can afford before you go ahead with your tiling project. I recommend that you price up first in your local tiling supplies store and get prices for tiles to cover the required area and prices for equipment. Once you have your prices you can then compare it to what you can afford.

3) Source Your Tools
Unless you hear of a sale in your local hardware store, it is unlikely that you are going to find a better offer on tools than online. With so much competition online for tools, you will find great bargains for the best quality tools.

4) Get The best Deal For Your Tiles
I recommend you buy tools online, but tiles for me is a different story. It is good to see a tile in a showroom under different types of light.
If you are unsure how much you need, get a shop assistant to help you in terms of measuring the number of tiles you need.

5) Buy Spare Tiles
It is also wise to add an extra 5-10% extra to account for breakages and to cut tiles for difficult corners. Sometimes, the more you buy the bigger the discount you can get for your purchases. The frustrating thing about tiling is that you are likely going to experience breakages as cutting tiles can be difficult for DIY tilers.

6) Check The Level Of The Floor Or Wall
Before starting you should check to see how level the floor or wall is. Sometimes there can be imperfections in floor and walls. If you do not level these out, it will become visible when you lay the tiles.

7) Layout All The Cut Tiles Before Sticking Them
As a DIY first timer I laid out all the tiles first to ensure it all looked correct. This helped to assure myself that all was good so I proceeded to stick them. I think this is a good solution if you have never tiled before. If you stick them as you go along you could end up having to lift them again and that just gets messy.

8) Use Good quality Grout
Grouting is the last step. Be sure that you use a good quality grout. The last thing you want is grout to lift overtime and you end up with holes between the tiles.

If you follow these 8 tips, your chances of producing a quality tiling job will certainly help you in your next project.
