The right technology can make life less complicated and automate the boring. For example, control the microwave with your cell phone, set the right mood with dim lighting, raise or lower the curtains, turn on the air conditioning or a stove in the kitchen etc…and via a Bluetooth or WiFi Internet connection from almost anywhere in the world.

In order to automate some processes or domestic tasks, only a few devices need to be incorporated into your home and most of them are easy to use and install.

How to transform a house into an automated home.

The main advantage of home automation is to leave certain tasks in the hands of technology that allow us to save energy and time, while allowing for greater security and comfort. The starting point is that you can connect to the Internet or interact with other devices through Bluetooth. You need a solid internet connection. No getting around that.

-Planning and long-term: if you are going to build or remodel, you can include automation of the home into the budget. While the price of your home could appreciate considerably with a little automation, this initial investment is amortized in less than 10 years and allows energy savings of up 20 percent.

- Progressive adaptation: it is not necessary to do all the automation all at once; the process can be done stepwise. The good thing is that most systems are designed to accommodate additional modules progressively: for example, you can start with the lights, blinds and sound system and then acquire compatible appliances one by one.

-Compatibility: it is a great advantage to think strategically what systems are going to be used to connect the appliances to each other. Apple, Google and Samsung offer different practical alternatives of good quality that are usually compatible with all the intelligent devices of the market. I’ll leave it up to you to decide which products are best for you between Alexa, Google Home, Nest etc…

-Connection: usually one of the biggest problems when it comes to carrying out home technology is the wireless network. Again, don’t skimp here as a strong internet connection is key to making this all work.

Functions for a home automation

-Intelligent lighting. One of the first things that people automate is the lights. For this, it is key to know that there are lights with very diverse functions and technical issues that must be considered, such as those that only need to be connected in order to work automatically, although there are some options with more complex installation systems that merit other considerations.

Another point to define is how many environments are going to be automated, since these bulbs are somewhat expensive. Maybe it does not make sense to do it in the bathroom or in the kitchen, but only in the living or bedrooms or at the front of the house for additional security.

-Heating systems. Having an automated heating system allows for considerable energy savings. You can use the controls to turn the heating on or off when you are away from the home, you can use the home automation platform to control the temperature using sensors to determine it. I’m biased towards Nest products.

-Security systems. One of the most sought-after home automation applications is the one aimed at security. This type of platform allows you to create surveillance schemes, door locking, alarms and much more. Although the installation can be somewhat more expensive, it is amortized over the long term, especially in insecure areas where the risk of theft is greater. These smart home security systems include:

  • Intrusion controls.
  • Automatic closing of doors and windows.
  • Wireless alarms
  • WiFi surveillance camera.
  • Wireless doorbells

Most can be controlled from the phone, and you’re guaranteed to receive notifications before any event that happens in the home, no matter how far away they are.

-Kitchen and washing. Thanks to the technology, many appliances can be opened, closed, turned off, switched on or regulated. There are coffee makers, microwaves, toasters and washing machines with WiFi that allow automation of functions. For example, you can connect the coffee machine to the system so that it turns on in the morning and find fresh coffee or turn on the washing machine while the you’re out of the house. The applications are multiple and are within the reach of a click.

-Accessibility. One of the great achievements of the use of home automation technology is that it facilitates the management of certain elements of the home to people with disabilities or elderly people with restricted mobility. In addition, it offers assistance and care services remotely, improving the quality of life.

-Entertainment. We also find a use more related to entertainment. Forget headphones, among the most common examples of wireless automation is fully automated sound systems, intercoms or technologies for automatic reproduction of audiovisual content in the right environment. In everything that is audio and video, there is a strong tendency towards intelligent solutions.

The only thing that isn’t digital is my dr scale (hey if the pros use it, then it’s probably more accurate than a digital scale). Other than that, m home is fully automated and I’m by no means rich. Between a robot vacuum cleaner, a Nest, wireless doorbell, wireless sound system, and lighting, I paid no more than $1,500.

These are just a few items you can use to turn your house into a smart home.
