6 Steps to Protect your Place of Business

Written by Posted On Monday, 01 July 2019 05:09

You’ve worked tirelessly to build it up over the years to where it is now, and you’d be devastated if anything happened that negatively impacted the running of your business. But how much protection do you actually take when it comes to business security?

Keeping your business secure and protected is not only important for peace of mind, but also so that you have the right safety measures in place should something happen to put your business at risk. Protecting your property and valuables by deterring burglars from selecting your place of work for crime is a must-do for every business, no matter how big or small.

If you’re a business owner who’s looking to improve your workplace security, here are some key steps to follow to ensure you’re adequately protected:

1.   Assess what you already have

It’s likely that you have some form of security measures in place for your business already, so the first step is to sit down and assess what these might be, and how effective they are to providing protection for your property and valuables. Are they still doing a good job, or are there alternative solutions that could do a better one? Is there anything you’re lacking? Anything you’ve considered in the past that might be of more value today?

Once you’ve assessed exactly what you do have, it’s a good idea to look for what you don’t have- and get searching on the internet for the business security features that are available today. You might be surprised to see just how much technology has advanced in the security sector, allowing for features that simply weren’t feasible ten or twenty years ago. Researching online is a great way to take inspiration for your own business by finding out what’s popular, what others are using, and why.

2.   Replace your old security alarm

How long have you been using the same security alarm for? Can’t remember? It might be that it’s time you were due an update. Old alarms just don’t compare to the new smart counterparts that are available on the market today. They’re outdated, often inefficient, and simply don’t offer the easiest security solution for a business owner.

A smart security alarm can be switched on and off from your phone, so it’s no big deal if, for example, you forget to activate the one in your workplace on a certain day. You can also be alerted on your phone if the alarm has been triggered, meaning if required, you can take action faster to resolve the issue. Having that feeling of being in control is always important for the smooth running of your business, and a smart security camera can help you with that.

3.   Determine your business security system needs

Not all businesses are the same, of course, and your values may be very different to that of another company. It is perfectly possible to tailor your business security system to entirely suit your needs, and many factors may come into place when making such a decision. Property size, for example, is likely to play a role in which security features you opt for. Business assets, such as vital technological equipment, company cars, and buildings used for business are another one.

While it is considered essential for all businesses to own an effective, modern security alarm, it is up to you what else you deem to be important for protecting your own place of business. If you have many staff working for you, it may be just as important to monitor the goings-on inside your business, and not just outside. In that case, you might consider adding indoor security cameras to your security system. If your business is located in a hotspot area for crime, external cameras and motion detectors may be of the highest importance.

4.   Go smart

Smart technology has almost completely taken over the more traditional forms of security nowadays, and for good reason. It is far more convenient, often allowing you to access your security features from your phone, enabling you to activate and deactivate alarms, check cameras, lock doors, and even turn on your lights remotely.

Whatever your business might be, there are ways you can personally use smart security to your advantage. If you receive a lot of visitors, for example, you may be interested in the smart doorbell, which uses a camera to stream a recording of whoever is at the door straight to your phone or computer screen. If you have staff coming in and out all day, you might want to use key cards, scanners on your phone, or fingerprint scanners, as a more effective solution to using the dated key code option- or even more limiting, a physical key.

5.   Don’t forget cyber security

In an era of technological dominance, it’s worth noting that almost always, your online databases and logs are just as important as your business’ physical security. If you don’t have some form of adequate security in place for your any files or records your store on a computer system, it’s time to consider something immediately. Keeping your property and assets safe is no use if your company data can be manipulated or stolen online.

6.   Stay on top of the trends

It’s easy to fall behind on the home security trends, especially as there seems to be something new popping up at every moment. It’s a good idea, though, to keep an eye on these latest developments, as something might just come along that’s ideal for your business. Make an effort to visit one or two smart security websites from time to time and take note of their latest offers. It’s the easiest way to stay ahead of your competitors, and maybe find yourself a good deal or two while you’re at it.

While business security can be costly, it should only ever be seen as investment- a vital something to ensure you’ll never find your company in real danger. If something is preventable, go ahead and prevent it, and save the potential regret at a later date.
