Concrete Patio Construction - Understanding the Basics

Written by Posted On Tuesday, 09 July 2019 21:40

A concrete patio can be a wonderful addition to any home. A patio provides an exterior living space for your family as well as a space for outdoor gatherings and entertainment. In most parts of the country the onset of warmer and drier weather provides the optimum conditions for construction of a new concrete patio.

The most important element of any new patio is its surface. The long-term appearance and durability of a concrete patio surface is entirely dependent upon the quality of its construction and the materials used. Shoddy workmanship and the use of low-grade materials can have a negative impact on the appearance and viability of any concrete surface.

The Basics for the Homeowner

Terrell & Co Contracting, based in Lewisburg, PA., has extensive experience in the construction of concrete patios. That experience has resulted in a level of expertise unsurpassed within the communities that they serve. They offer the following information to anyone wanting to learn the basics of concrete patio construction.

Choose Your Contractor Carefully

Creation of a long-lasting and attractive patio surface requires a combination of knowledge, experience, and skill. When selecting a contractor for your patio project make sure to verify that they have concrete patio construction experience that can be verified.

Understanding the Process

Knowledge of the basic steps involved with laying a concrete patio will allow you to follow the work of your contractor and to understand what is happening throughout the construction work. Once the layout for your patio's surface has been established the construction process will typically consist of the following steps:

  • Staking out the patio's dimensions: Stakes are driven into the ground to mark the layout of the patio.
  • Surface preparation: Grass, weeds, and topsoil will be removed from within the area that has been staked.
  • Base preparation: The base will be dug to a depth of between 4 and 8 inches.
  • Laying gravel: A layer of gravel or crushed rock (~ 4 inches deep) will be poured into the dug-out base. This surface area will then be leveled.
  • Installation of frames: Wood frames will be cut and laid around the perimeter of the patio. These frames hold the poured concrete in place.
  • Mixing and pouring the concrete: The concrete will then be mixed and poured into the framed area. The contractor must adhere to best-practices to ensure a quality result.
  • Finishing and smoothing: cured concrete will be finished and smoothed out to ensure consistency across its entire surface.
  • Curing: The concrete will be allowed to cure for 2 or 3 days before use.

Stamped Concrete Patios

If you have decided on a stamped concrete patio the contractor will stamp your selected designs into the freshly-poured concrete. The process requires a specific set of tools and expertise to ensure a quality result. When done properly, a stamped concrete can create a unique ambiance for your patio’s surface.

Terrell & Co Contracting, artisanal provider of a Bathroom Remodel in Lewisburg, PA hopes that this information will be beneficial to you as you begin the process of constructing a wonderful new patio for your home.
