Advice to Homeowners Going Through Damage Restoration

Written by Posted On Tuesday, 16 July 2019 19:53

Whether it’s the damage caused by fire or flood, it can be a devastating thing you can ever undergo as a homeowner. No matter what the cause of the damage might be, you have to know what to do for your home to get it back to the original condition.

A proactive approach will reduce the extent of the catastrophe and also make the repair quite easier. Here’s what you need to do when you take up damage restoration.

Safety precautions

The first step is to ensure that your family is safe. If it’s water damage caused by floods and it’s bad enough, then consider leaving your home. Make sure that there is nothing that will harm you even when you return to your house. Below are some preventive measures you can take:

  • Turn off the power because water can cause electricity-related issues.

Wear protective clothing. Rubber boots and gloves when you walk through the doors of your home are a must.

Don’t eat food from the house, especially perishable items. Your fridge might have been off for several hours or maybe days.

Wash all dinnerware, flatware, and glasses that might have been in contact with floodwater.

Remove water

The best thing to do when your home has floodwater is to stop the source of the water. Replace any broken sump pumps so that the persistent rains may not further damage your home.

You should call for the city services to help you to remove the storm debris to ensure there is no longer flooding inside the premises. However, if the flooding was as a result of a burst pipe, you need to repair the plumbing. This will prevent more damage from being done to your home.

Having removed the water in your home, you’ll still have to contend with the damp and wet items. You can use air conditioning and even fans to dry the wet areas like walls, carpets, sofas, etc. For those living in damp climates, you can use dehumidifiers to get rid of excess moisture from the air.

It’s easier said than done. Whether you yourself can manage it or not, entirely depends on the level of damage. If it’s not something that you can manage on your own, call the best water damage restoration service.

Call your insurance company

Your insurance policy will determine if it covers damages because of floods or fire. If it’s covered, you must act fast to receive the payout. Repairs for your home can be costly, but with the insurance paying for it, it will be easier and quicker.

The insurance company will come to assess the damages and it will let you know the estimate of payouts. Take the photos of your home before and after you have cleaned up your house. The adjuster will need to see the photos to assess the damages caused by the flood.

Repairing your home

The damage inflicted on your home mostly take a lot of time to repair. The windows might be broken and require replacing and the floor may also need replacement, especially if it’s wooden flooring. For this reason, after getting the insurance claim, ensure that you get a reputable contractor to help you with the repairs.

The electrical problems need to be handled by a professional and a certified electrician. Avoid plugging back to the power source all electrical devices if they came into contact with the water. Television sets, computers, game consoles, and many other devices should not be used until an electrician has reviewed the situation of your home.

There are civil work companies available that specialize in natural disaster repairs. They have experience in dealing with such cases, so it’s a good idea to avail their services. A professional construction company should be capable of determining the type of repairs you need for your home and do it in the best possible way.
