Nylon carpets are popular for their durability and resistance to stains as long as proper cleaning methods and solutions are used. They are a favored choice for homes, especially for high traffic areas. And it’s a great carpet for rooms with heavier furniture such as dressers, beds and couches. Fortunately, cleaning nylon carpet is not difficult. Here are a few tips for nylon carpet cleaning.

Nylon Carpet Cleaning

Nylon carpet cleaning is rather straightforward and simple. There are three things to do when maintaining your nylon carpet: clean spills promptly, vacuum frequently, have your carpet cleaned by a professional every two years.

1. Day-To-Day Care

There are three main things to do when maintaining your new nylon carpet.

  • Clean spills promptly

  • Vacuum frequently

  • Have your carpet cleaned by a professional carpet cleaner at least every two years or so

Vacuuming your carpet frequently is the most critical thing to do in order to keep your carpet looking fresh and clean. Vacuuming helps to rid your carpet of dirt particles, which dull the carpet’s appearance.

2. Cleaning Agents

Most cleaning agents will work well with nylon carpets and will help in disinfecting them. However, you want to avoid cleaners with a high alkaline content as they may cause the nylon carpet to lose its stain-resistant ability. If you choose to use a steam cleaner, go for cleaning agents with pH lower than 10 to avoid reducing the carpet’s resistance to stains.

3. Cleaning Techniques

Nylon carpets can be cleaned with dry foam products, foam cleaning products and steam cleaners and detergents. Steam cleaning is great for removing dirt deep in the carpet pile. Steam cleaning doesn’t actually use steam, but instead hot jet of water are shot into the carpet fiber and immediately vacuumed up along with any loosened dirt.

4. Stain Removal Techniques

Nylon is stain resistant but it may still become stained or spotted. The trick is to blot up the stain as soon as possible to prevent it from setting. Home remedies that can help to lift stains from your nylon carpet include lemon juice, club soda, white vinegar and water. Here are some steps to take when spot cleaning spillages.

  • Start by scooping up any solids

  • Blot as much of the spilled liquid as you can, using a wet vacuum cleaner or a clean white towel.

  • Use water or a cleaning agent to clean the carpet. However, be careful not to put the cleaning agent directly on the carpet, instead apply it to a clean white towel.

  • Always avoid spreading the stain by working from the stain’s outer edges towards the center. Also, do not rub the pile.

  • Once you’re done, rinse the area with cool water and then blot using an absorbent towel to avoid carpet wicking spots. Finally, avoid using the treated area until it’s thoroughly dry.

Note: do not scrub or rub nylon carpets as this may permanently distort the pile.

Bottom Line

Over time, even regular vacuuming won’t be able to remove debris that has accumulated deep in the pile. In such cases, it’s highly recommended to seek the services of a professional carpet cleaner. A reputable cleaner will have the technical knowledge on nylon carpet cleaning and use safe and effective carpet cleaning products to maintain your carpet’s beauty and prolong its useful life.
