HVAC Tips and Tricks to Save Money on Your Energy Bill

Written by Posted On Wednesday, 24 July 2019 16:24

The U.S. Energy Information Administration’s most recent Residential Energy Consumption Survey (RECS) says 12% of U.S. home energy expenditures go to air conditioning. That’s about right because our AC unit does consume a lot of electricity, especially during the summer. And when winter comes around, prepare for much higher than usual energy bills as well thanks to your heating.

Keeping your family warm in the winter and cool in the summer, however, doesn’t have to cost you a small fortune every month. There are several HVAC tips and tricks that can help you save money on your energy bill. Sure, your energy bills will still be higher than those you get during fall and spring, but at least using your heating and air conditioning system for the entirety of summer and winter wouldn’t cost you an arm and a leg.

Get heating and air conditioning repair done.

Your HVAC system may not be getting much use during spring and autumn, but there’s no guarantee it will be running properly by the time you’re going to need it. So have your HVAC system checked before the summer and winter months come. If HVAC technicians do discover something wrong, then you must have that problem repaired straight away. You wouldn’t want your HVAC system to break down in the middle of extreme weather.

Plug those holes.

One of the worst things that your HVAC system can ever do is cool the neighborhood, courtesy of the holes, gaps, or cracks in your home. You spend a lot of money heating and cooling air, only to let it escape through them. Help your HVAC unit perform more efficiently by plugging all those holes to ensure that no heated or cooled air will escape your home easily.

Use a programmable thermostat.

When you have a programmable thermostat for your HVAC system, you will be spared from keeping your HVAC unit running on high when you’re not at home. You can easily set a schedule that will follow not only your routine but that of every member of your household as well. Your programmable thermostat allows you to keep the temperature warm or cool while you’re home and cut back on the energy usage while you’re away.

Dress appropriately for the weather.

If you’re just staying at home on a hot summer day, then wear tank tops, shorts, or any type of clothing that will help you stay cool. The same goes for your clothing choices in the middle of winter. Coats, sweaters, bonnets, socks, and more socks can help keep you warm. By dressing appropriately for the weather, you won’t have to set the thermostat too high or too low just to be comfortable. Your clothes should be able to help you out in that regard without spending too much money on heating or cooling.

Clean or replace the air filter of your HVAC unit.

Having HVAC maintenance done before the onset of summer or winter means the air filter in your system will be clean. That won’t be the case after a month or so. Dust and debris will have already gathered by then, and that will lead to reduced airflow, which impacts an HVAC system’s efficiency directly. Check your HVAC air filter a month after an AC tuneup, and if it’s already filthy, clean or replace it immediately to ensure optimal airflow for the rest of the season.

These are just some of the HVAC tips and tricks that can help you get energy savings. Follow them to the letter, and see for yourself how effective they can be by the time you get your next energy bill!
