Insulate, Seal, and Save Some Green

Written by Posted On Thursday, 29 August 2019 12:36

Reducing the amount of heated or cooled air that leaks in and out of your home is one of the best ways to decrease energy usage and save money on utility bills. Sealing leaks and adding insulation not only cut your monthly bills, they also improve the efficiency of your home’s HVAC system, increase indoor comfort and air quality, and help reduce your impact on the environment.

What areas of your home might require additional insulation or sealing? As is turns out, almost every component of your home’s structure — from the attic to the basement — is a good candidate!

The accompanying infographic indicates locations in a typical home that might benefit from sealing and insulating, and the types of solutions that are most relevant to those spaces.

Insulation is a Great Investment

While insulation projects are not cheap, the money you save on lower utility bills will compensate for your upfront costs. If you can’t afford to shell out a lot of money at one time, consider doing one room or area of your home at a time. However, keep in mind that many contractors are not happy to accept such small jobs.

Of course, you can always reduce the project cost by doing it yourself. But keep in mind that DIY is only a good idea if the space you are planning to insulate is easily accessible, you plan to use batts and rolls instead of blown-in installation, there are no known safety issues (asbestos, mold, old wiring) in the area, and you are handy!

If your project — and your skills — meet those thresholds, then visit your local home improvement store, determine your home’s recommended R-value (insulation’s ability to resist heat), figure out and purchase the materials and get started. Remember, the sooner you start, the more money you’ll save!
