Wallet Friendly Ways to Make Your New Home Feel Warm and Cozy

Far from being just a place where you sleep at night, your home should be your retreat where you unwind after a long day and where you like to spend a lot of quality time. As psychotherapist Robi Ludwig says, the home environment should become a place of both physical and personal refuge. Creating a cozy living space is important, but it shouldn’t break the bank. There are plenty of things you can do to your room or entire home to transform it from average to super comfy. And the best part is that you don’t need a degree in interior design to do it. Check out these budget-friendly ideas.

It’s all about layers

One of the fastest ways to make a place feel warm and welcoming is by layering furniture with pillows and blankets. Upgrading a daybed or couch with a comforter and soft cotton blankets on top give you plenty of options for warmth while adding more pillows of various shapes and sizes can accommodate different activates like reading, napping or cuddling together.

Warm wall treatments

Many homeowners underestimate the importance of room colour for achieving comfortable and cosy ambience. The color effects are both subtle and significant, physical and psychological. For a more relaxing environment, make sure the colors are not extremely bright and instead give advantage to warmer shades of yellows, oranges, and natural browns, which are considered the cosiest of shades. Even darker colors can give your space a greater sense of cosiness by visually pulling the space together and making it feel more intimate.

Cosy floor rugs

Apart from making a space feel cosier, area rugs anchor the space and increase the feeling of intimacy, especially if used for conversation areas. A woollen rug with a lot of texture feels cosier than a light cotton or jute rug, which is more suited to cooler summer months. Rugs work especially well in rooms with wooden floors and a lot of glass, but even in a carpeted room, a rug can keep conversation areas together and create a sense of intimacy and cosiness.

Embrace natural light

Although we sometimes equalize lack of light and cosiness, it's not the point to turn your cosy home into a hibernation cave. With the onset of autumn, there's still plenty of natural light we can use to bring up the good mood. In this sense, it's important to declutter the room and remove the obstacles that block sunlight from flooding inside. Still, you need window blinds as a way to block the excessive light whey you're about to take a nap or want to watch TV. Modern blinds come in many variants, including cellular, Venetians, and panel blinds, but all have child-safe mechanisms and a ton of styling options.

Less gloss, more texture

The entire mood of the room can be changed by simply altering texture. With rougher textures you can make large spaces appear cosier, while using more high sheen, glossy textures make small spaces feel more open. For example, if you have a large lounge area that lacks cosiness, try introducing more dark or warm colours and rougher textures to help close the space in. On the other hand, if you're stuck with a small space that you want comfier but without feeling cramped inside, use more textures but keep the colors lighter with more sheen.

Atmosphere lighting

While natural sunlight is hard to beat when the sun sets, you need warm lighting to make your evening hours more pleasant. While cool daylight bulbs are used for task lighting, if allowed to dominate it may make spaces feel stark and uninviting. Yellow-toned LEDs, on the other hand, can add to the coziness of the space. Avoid using the main light, and instead, use a variety of floor and table lamps to create more illuminating depth and visual interest. A 60W floor lamp, or the LED with the same light output, is more than enough doe reading while a table lamp further in the room can bring attention to another pocket of interest.

Feeling good about being a homeowner is an important part of feeling good about yourself. These days, having a cozy living space isn't only easy to achieve but it is also affordable. When choosing furnishings, stick to basic inexpensive pieces, soft fabrics, warm colours, and soon you'll have a cosy space you'll want to stay in forever.
