If you have small kids or a pet, you’re likely familiar with various kinds of accidental carpet stains. From juice and ketchup to ink and mud, your carpet is exposed to all kinds of substances daily. However, one of the tougher stains you often have to deal with is urine. Fortunately, there are several ways you can go about cleaning urine out of carpet.

Cleaning Urine Out of Carpet - The Solution to Stained Carpet

It is important to consider carpet cleaning hacks when cleaning your carpet. This post will take you through two methods of cleaning urine out of your carpet. It features simple step-by-step processes that will ensure your carpet is clean in no time.

Using Liquid Dishwashing Detergent

  1. If the stained area is still wet, start by blotting as much of the urine as you can using paper towels or a clean cloth. Be sure to do this as fast as possible to prevent further absorption.
  2. Consider using a shop-vac to extract the remaining urine. However, if you don’t have one, proceed to the next step.
  3. Take 1/4 tsp of liquid dishwashing detergent and mix it with a cup of warm water. You want to avoid using dish soap or laundry detergent as they may contain lanolin or bleach.
  4. Pour the solution into a spray bottle so you can spay at the stain, aiming directly at the carpet.
  5. If you have a shop-vac, use it to extract the solution from the carpet. Otherwise, you can use paper towels or a clean cotton cloth after the solution has set into the stain.
  6. Rinse the area with warm water and if the stain is still visible, repeat steps 1-5 until the stain gradually fades.
  7. Finally, take 2 tbsp of ammonia and mix them into a cup of water. Rinse and repeat until you can no longer see the stain.

Removing Dog Urine from Carpet

As with most stains, it’s important to clean Fido’s urine stain right away. Letting it sit for too long can lead to the growth of bacteria, resulting in unpleasant odors.

  1. Soak up the urine using a cotton cloth or paper towels. You can use an old shoe to press on the stain and absorb as much urine as possible from the carpet.
  2. Prepare a solution of equal parts vinegar and water in a bowl. Be sure to mix enough of the solution so it can reach deep down into the carpet fibers.
  3. Pour the solution onto the stain and work it deeply into the carpet using a scrubbing brush. The vinegar will help to neutralize the ammonia in the urine.
  4. Use a paper towel to blot the urine stain.
  5. Once that section of the carpet is dry, take about 1-2 handfuls of baking soda and sprinkle it onto the stain.
  6. Mix half a cup of 3% hydrogen peroxide with a tsp of dishwashing detergent and apply it to the stain. Consider using a scrubbing brush to clean the carpet thoroughly.
  7. Finally, vacuum the area once it’s dry.
