5 Habits to Prevent Blocking Your Plumbing

Written by Posted On Thursday, 12 December 2019 11:46

While minor clogs usually aren’t very difficult to dislodge, major blockage in your sewer line could result in quite a bit of damage. Luckily, most clogs can easily be avoided with a few simple habits.

Never Flush Hygiene Products

When it comes to keeping your plumbing system running smoothly, very few habits are as important as keeping almost all hygiene products out of the pipes. Toilet paper and other products that are designed for plumbing systems are perfectly fine, but everything else should be thrown away. Within a short period of time, hygiene products are going to cling to the walls of the pipes and create clogs.

Use Shower Catches

It is an unfortunate fact that many homeowners struggle with plumbing issues because of all of the hair that gets into their sewage lines. To avoid that common problem, you might want to invest in a few shower catches. Those inexpensive items are nothing more than small baskets, and they will catch most of the hair in the shower before it gets into the pipes.

Keep Food Out of the Sink

Having the occasional food scrap get into the pipes shouldn’t be a major problem, but most food products must be kept out of your plumbing system at all times. That includes coffee grounds, eggshells, and produce scraps. You must also make sure that grease and animal fats never get rinsed down your drains.

Regularly Have the Pipes Maintained

A modern residential plumbing system should last for at least a few decades, but your pipes must be regularly maintained. Your plumber will be able to use a sewer camera and other important tools to catch and address minor problems before they become expensive catastrophes. They can also take care of issues such as slow drains, leaky faucets, and loud water heaters.

Run Hot Water Through the Sink

Whenever you do the dishes or rinse anything down your drains, you should always keep the hot water running for at least a few moments. When you turn the water off immediately, some of the scraps and particles could get trapped in the catch. Extremely hot water will break apart the debris that is in your traps so that a clog doesn’t occur.

If you have recently noticed a slow or stopped drain, then you must immediately contact a plumber for repairs. One of those contractors will be able to dislodge the debris and prevent further damage from taking place.
