5 Ways Your Home Can Make You Happy In Winter

Written by Posted On Friday, 17 January 2020 08:42

Moody. Depressed. Down in the dumps.

It's upon us. Millions of people feel this way every winter. Sunlight and nature are scarce. And we're stuck inside, sometimes for days at a time.

But this huddle environment is where we can protect ourselves from the blues. So much of how we feel depends on the SPACE that we occupy. So, let's take matters into our own hands and rig our homes for happiness and connection! We'll turn it into the personal oasis it's meant to be.

5 Ways to Let Your Home Brighten Your Mood

1. Let the Light in

Just because you can't get outside, doesn't mean you have to miss out on the sunlight. Be sure to open your home curtains every morning in the winter. Let that light in through as many windows as possible.

Another easy addition to your home? A light therapy lamp. You can find lamps as little as 20-30 dollars that give the same type of light. Hang it in your bathroom, and you're giving yourself a little boost of light happiness.

2. Encourage Connection

Connecting is harder in the winter, but it doesn't have to be impossible. Create a coffee/tea station in your home and invite a neighbor over for a hot beverage. Or establish a book corner and read a good book at the same time as another family member. Finally, invest in good kitchen utensils and stay in making healthy delicious meals with your spouse.

There are so many ways to utilize your space to encourage bonding. Pick one room in your house. How can you design that room for maximum love and connection?

Need a quick boost? Display lots of photos on your walls of beautiful memories with loved ones. Just looking at them will create a boost of happiness.

3. Create a Snuggle Environment

Winter is best for cuddling! Make it so with heavy throws, good quality rugs, and soft lighting such as lamps and twinkle lights. Go a step further and put your phones on certain nights of the week. Use that time to snuggle on the couch with those you love instead (perhaps next to a roaring fire!).

4. Brighten up Your Space

Not everything has to be ho-hum this time of year! Find a new bright piece of furniture or colorful rug that makes you feel good. Insert it where you'll see it often and enjoy the feel-good benefits. If money's tight, a peppy new coffee cup or small decoration will also do the trick. The idea is to spruce up your space to wake up your soul.

5. Incorporate Nature

Nature is stress relief at it's finest. It heals, calms, and enlivens us. Bring as much of that in as possible! Insert small plants or trees in every room of your home. Then, buy yourself fresh flowers at least once during the darkest days. Not only will you be in a better mood, but you'll breathe fresher air too!

In Conclusion

Winter doesn't have to bring out our darkest days. With a few small tweaks to our home, we can love the season that brings us snow. Start simple with something today, and continue to build your winter dream home this year!
