6 Tips for Moving Day

Written by Posted On Sunday, 31 May 2020 20:19

It’s typical for a move from a three to four-bedroom house to take more than 6 hours. There is a lot that goes into moving besides your belongings. Time, money, manpower, equipment, are just a few to things you must put into moving from your old home. I want to make your next move easy. In this article, I will talk about six tips for improving your moving day.

           1)    Give or Throw Away Unwanted Items

Just because you are moving doesn’t mean you are required to take everything with you. You should go through each room with boxes or garbage bags for the items you know you don’t need to take with you to your new home. I recommend giving unwanted items to your local charity, church, or non-profit organization rather than just throwing them away.

           2)    Use Your SmartPhone to Keep Moving Records

You are going to have paperwork from your move. Why not keep an electronic copy on your smartphone? This way you can easily look up moving details whenever you need them. If you prefer paper just make sure you at least keep everything in a folder.

           3)    Setup Appointments As Soon As Possible

Moving is a big task that usually requires help from multiple sources. If you can’t find a painter to paint your walls in time, then you will have an issue with your buyer. A moving company that realizes you are desperate to move will be motivated to overcharge you for their services. It is ideal to give yourself as much time as possible to hire all the help you need to move on the date you need to leave your old home.

           4)    Rent Don’t Buy Moving Equipment

Unless you plan on being a professional mover or being that friend who helps all their friends move, then buying moving equipment is a waste of money. Rent the equipment, which always has a cheaper upfront cost. Your next move may not be for years so it’s better to rent equipment as needed to save your money and also space in your new home.

            5)    Fill All Your Boxes

Organization is important when moving since it makes unpacking easier, so this tip isn’t about just throwing whatever you want into boxes just to not be wasteful. You should have different sized boxes so boxes never feel not ready to move to the movers or friends you had somehow convinced into helping you move. Those boxes may end up being left behind because they thought you were going to finish filling them later.

            6)    Write an Inventory List on Each Box

Take out that permanent marker and write a list of what you plan on putting in each box. You want the movers to know immediately where each box needs to go to quicken the unpacking process. If you are using black garbage bags to move clothes, then tape the inventory list on each bag. Sticky notes will easily come off during the move.
