How to Set-Up Your Home to Successfully Home School Your Children During this COVID-19 Lockdown

Written by Kimberly Evans Posted On Monday, 31 August 2020 21:30

Homeschooling children is the single biggest challenge faced by parents around the world. This COVID-19 pandemic has suddenly restricted all movements and activities and this has been hard on people of all ages, especially children as schools are shut and they are forced to study through online classes and materials.

As a concerned parent, you should do everything you can to provide an environment that's conducive to learning. Here are some suggestions for you.

Make the most of virtual tours

If you miss taking your kids to the zoo or nature walks, bring them home! Many zoos, aquariums, and galleries are offering free virtual tours to help parents to keep their children occupied and also to give them a hands-on feel on what these animals are doing. These zoos have set up high-definition cameras around their premise and stream them live, so your kids can get a virtual tour of their favorite animals and their activities!

Create a learning room/corner

One of the most difficult aspects of homeschooling is to provide a quiet time and space for your child to learn. Regardless of the size of your home, de-clutter a room or a small space, put a desk that is similar to the one at school, and ensure that you provide a quiet space for them to focus and learn.

Depending on your budget, you can even buy a whiteboard for them to practice and anything that would give them a better learning experience.

Maintain a schedule

If you have two or more children, your job becomes particularly tough to babysit them all day, besides focusing on your work and household chores. This is where a routine or schedule helps. It gives a structure to your day and can make it easy for everyone. You can even write down the schedule in a place that everyone can see and if you have older children, assign household chores, so they get used to doing things around the house.

Take professional help

Handling sudden changes can be overwhelming for you and your children. If you notice drastic mood swings, withdrawal symptoms, and other behavioral changes, make sure to reach out to a professional right away. Doctors and nurses are equipped with the right information and more importantly, they are taught to communicate well to children of all ages. So, tap into their expertise if you have to.

Avail online courses and educators

Now that everything has moved online, many schools, private educators, large organizations, and others are offering a ton of free and paid online courses. Scour the Internet for such courses, read through their reviews, get recommendations, and research well before signing up your kids for these courses.

Connect with like-minded parents

This pandemic has been a great equalizer as it has brought life to a halt for most people around the world. This means you're not alone as you and your children learn to cope with online schooling. Connect with like-minded parents so you can share  resources, ideas, and even questions and frustrations!

Thus, these are some ways to prepare yourself and your home for learning during this lockdown.
