7 Tips To Fortify Your Home Against Worst-Case Scenarios

Posted On Monday, 15 November 2021 19:50

If you get stuck at home during survival scenarios such as a pandemic or civil unrest, the safety of your family is the first thing you should focus on. With that said, you should take steps in safeguarding and fortifying your home against intruders and criminals taking advantage of the situation.

Here are home security tips on how to deter thieves, looters, or gangsters and protect your family against the worst-case scenarios.

  1. 1. Get Insurance

Having the right insurance can help mitigate the impact if you and your family are victims of burglary or invasion. Protect your home and property, especially during natural disasters, with the right homeowner insurance. Also, consider a collections policy for valuables such as jewelry, art collections, cash, and more since most homeowner policies don’t cover valuable possessions.

You also want to protect your loved ones against debt with mortgage insurance in case of your sudden death during the worst-case scenario.

2. Invest In A Home Security system

For most homeowners, investing in a reliable home security system can help in preventing crimes and home invasion scenarios.

There are plenty of home security options for every level of protection and budget, whether you get a basic Do It Yourself (DIY) system or invest in professional monitoring and home automation. Evaluate your home and see what protection is needed or consult with experts for a home security evaluation.

The most basic home security system should include security cameras, motion sensors, and alarm systems.

3. Secure The Doors

An estimated over 30% of all criminals enter homes through the front door. Inspect your exterior doors and ensure that the frames are strong, and the hinges are protected. In case your door has a mail slot, make sure that someone can’t reach through it to unlock the door.

Reinforce your doors with deadbolts, 3-inch screws in door jambs, and add dowel rods if you have sliding doors. Also, make sure to upgrade the locks with smart locks and install a wide-angle peephole and a video doorbell.

4. Extra Window Protection

Next to doors, windows are the most common entry points for criminals. So, you want to add extra window protection. Manufacturer latches on windows are not always effective and sometimes downright flimsy. Instead, you can upgrade with key-operated levers or aftermarket window locks.

Make sure to reinforce glass with a window security film, making your window stronger and resistant to breaking. While it does not guarantee complete invulnerability to criminals, it should slow them down, and you’re likely to notice the intrusion to act beforehand.

You can also install a glass or window break sensor such as window bars for added security against forced entry. You might also want to plant some prickly bushes under your first-floor windows to deter criminals away.

5. Store Guns Away

Firearms are desirable items for a criminal. Over 200,000 guns are stolen during home burglaries every year. If your gun doesn’t get stolen, placing it in the middle of the room can result in an accident.

So, make sure to invest in a safe gun where you can store your weapon, keeping it out of the hands of criminals and protecting your family from a tragic accident. You can opt for under-bed gun safe options that should keep your firearm close to you in case of emergencies.

6. Don’t Forget Outdoors

If you have a large plot of land, make sure to use them to your advantage. Your landscaping shouldn’t have any hiding place where burglars can lurk around. So, make sure to trim trees and shrubs to create an open space.

Other than trimming your outdoor plants, you also need to install bright outdoor lighting. If possible, go with motion-sensing lights, surprising criminals and deterring from entering your home, as well as allowing security cameras to get better views.

Also, don’t forget to fortify your fences. Cement bases and open metal or chain links can prevent easy access to your property while also making it easier to spot criminals.

  1. 7. Consider Safe Rooms

No longer considered a luxury, safe rooms can provide your family with a safe space when acts of crime, natural disasters, or even a war break out. Consider retrofitting a closet, room, or even the basement to help shield your family during these times.  Ensure that the safe room is equipped with a security door, peephole, deadbolt, and reinforced ceilings, floors, and walls. Of course, safe rooms should also have stockpiles for extended stays like cell phone chargers, power outlets, extra phones, emergency lighting, food, water, first aid kits, and self-defense devices.

Conclusion

From crazy psychopaths, thieves, and killers to wars and pandemics and even natural disasters— there’s no doubt that the world has become more dangerous than ever. Fortify your home with the above tips to help increase your family’s chance of survival in the worst-case scenario.
