Considering a DIY Roof Repair? 3 Reasons Why It’s a Bad Idea

Posted On Thursday, 23 December 2021 20:13

Every handy person who loves to do work around the house is faced with two types of projects, the ones you can do well on your own, and the projects that should only be done by a trained professional. Get these two categories mixed up, and you might end up biting off a lot more than you can chew and with a lot of regret. For example, you can comfortably unblock a clogged shower drain, but if there’s leaky pipes, that’s certainly a project you need to leave to the professionals.

If you’re good with your hands and do your own DIY projects around the house, you might be tempted to fix up some issues on your roof. You’d think that it would save you a whole lot of money, but that’s far from the truth. A roof repair is one of the most challenging projects you could ever undertake, and it’s actually more trouble than it’s worth. You’re actually not saving money or time by stepping over contractors. What are the major risks that come with DIYing your roof repair? Here are 3 reasons why you should never consider fixing up your roof DIY-style.

It’s Too Important to Tinker With It Without Knowledge

Your roof isn’t just a minor part of your home, it’s probably the most important aspect of the property. Without a roof, there isn’t much to your house, it would be exposed to the elements, and everything you owned would be in danger of damage and destruction. Because a roof actually protects every aspect of your home, including the people that live in it, you can’t be tinkering with it if you really don’t know what you’re doing. Professionals are trained to deal with roofs and handle any kind of circumstance, and they will be able to fix the roof and ensure that it’s done well enough to maintain the structural integrity of the home.

The residential or commercial roofing contractor who will come and do installations and repairs has the experience that a home DIYer just doesn’t have, and that’s why it wouldn’t be wise to take a repair on by yourself. Also, if a DIY roof repair doesn’t go well, that means you might create other problems that would have been avoided if you had just done it right in the first place. Doing a self-repair on your roof, and ending up with a shoddy final product is also going to lower the value of your home, and if your end result is really bad, you might find yourself needing to cough up thousands of dollars for an entirely new roof.

It’s Not Safe

Climbing to the top of your house with nothing more than a ladder is extremely dangerous. Professionals know how to climb on a roof and have the right equipment for it. Many people who try to do this themselves actually put life and limb at risk because they aren’t trained to be working so high up. If you were to fall off your roof, there’s no telling how serious the injury will be, and it’s just not worth the risk. Rather pay for someone who knows what they’re doing.

You’ll Lose Insurance Coverage

Repairing your roof on your own isn’t just dangerous, it is also not financially prudent.

The rules that govern insurance coverage are very stringent, your home has to be in a certain condition, and certain rules have to be followed. If you in any way work on your own roof, you’re going to void your homeowner’s insurance which is bad. If your roof was to get damaged in a storm, insurance would very likely reject your claim because you did something that actually isn’t allowed.

Repairing your own roof sounds simple in theory, but it really isn’t, and it’s not something you need to consider as a DIY project. Even if you think you know how to do it, or feel like a YouTube video or two will prepare you, there’s a lot more that goes into repairing a roof than just patching up a few areas. This is why you need to enlist the services of someone who knows and understands what such a significant project is going to take, and can handle any type of damage or issue. After all, your roof is what keeps everything inside your home safe from the elements, and from damage. Why cut corners on something that’s so important? It’s better to limit your DIY adventures to something with much lower stakes.
