What Should You Do with Your Furniture if You Move to a New Location?

Posted On Friday, 18 February 2022 13:32

Moving to a new home can give you the chance to start with a fresh slate. A new area, job, house, friends, climate, and culture give you a shot at a different identity, but does your old furniture fit in with that change? That depends on how much value you place on them.

What to do With Furniture When You Move House

You can do four things with wanted or unwanted furniture: store it, sell it, chuck it, or give it away. Here’s how you can keep or get rid of your belongings before moving day.

Put Furniture in a Storage Facility

Secure self-storage facilities are the perfect way to keep your items safe without having to move them to your new place. Moving house is often triggered by life events, like marriage, college, military, or divorce, so you may need these items again in the near or distant future.

For example, if you’re moving to San Antonio, Texas, renting a storage unit would be ideal if you’re downsizing or you need a place to hold your larger items during the transition.

Sell Your Furniture (On and Offline)

The fewer items you have to move, the easier and cheaper your relocation will be. Anything you could bear to part with shouldn’t make it on the moving truck, so try to sell your items a few months before the big day. This gives you the best chance of selling and making money.

Garage sales are great for homeowners, but if you rent an apartment or live in a condo, online is your best bet. Sites like Facebook Marketplace and Craigslist are good places to start.

Go to a Consignment Shop

While this is more doable on moving day because you’ll have a truck to transport your items, a consignment shop is a great option for anything you can’t sell independently. While you won’t get as much profit from a furniture dealer, it beats not selling it at all or taking it to the dump.

Don’t get discouraged if the shop won’t take your items; it doesn’t mean they’re worthless or in bad condition. If you still have items leftover, you can donate them to a local charity.

Donate Furniture to Charity

It can be difficult to sell furniture, either because it’s out of style or it costs too much for the buyer to pick it up. However, most charities will gladly take your used furniture free of delivery charges. However, they won’t take your junk, so don’t use charity trucks as garbage disposal.

When giving your items to charity, ask for a donation slip with the estimated value of your goods written on it. With this receipt, you’ll be able to reduce your tax burden in the year it’s purchased.

Give Your Furniture Away

If your furniture isn’t sellable or meets the drop-off requirements for a charity, you can offer your furniture for free. There are a lot of people that need furniture for their apartment, either because they’re low income, struggling, or lost their items in a fire/flood. You’ll be making someone's day.

At the same time, you’ll be able to get rid of your unwanted pieces without paying for their disposal. In the end, you’re helping someone in need and yourself by decreasing moving costs.

Throw Out Your Furniture

Throwing out your furniture should be a last resort option. Not only is furniture disposal expensive, but it’s bad for the environment. However, if your items are in poor condition and there’s no possibility you could store, sell, or give them away, you’ll need to get rid of them.

To trash large furniture, you could rent a roll-off dumpster, hire a junk removal service, take metal furniture to a scrap dealer, or take unwanted items to the dump when you move.
