Bridgetown was founded by English settlers in 1628 and was aptly named after a bridge that had been left behind by previous Amerindian settlers in the area. As a strategically positioned colonial outpost, it grew into a booming commerce centre. Today, the old town remains rich in colonial-era architecture and is designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Transportation in Bridgetown

It's simple to navigate your way around Bridgetown. A well-organised public transportation system can get you around by bus, and there are plenty of safe private buses, taxis, and rental automobiles available for further exploration.

Walking is the best and most convenient method to go around the downtown area, visit businesses, and enjoy the laid-back ambiance. The Grantley Adams airport is located in the southeast of the island, approximately 13 kilometres (8 miles) from Bridgetown, and acts as a hub for the Eastern Caribbean islands.

From Bat’s Rock beach in the north to Worthing Beach in the south, Bridgetown is lined by beach after beach, with none more photographed than the beaches and the beach clubs of Carlisle Bay.
