What to Look for in a Property Insurance Attorney

Posted On Monday, 28 March 2022 20:28

If you have recently had a property insurance claim denied by an insurance company or if you were offered a paltry settlement, you may be considering a lawsuit. Even if you do not sue, talking to an attorney is a good idea. An attorney can negotiate with the insurance company on your behalf and get you a better settlement. Most insurance companies will not give you a good settlement if they think you do not have an attorney.

Finding the right attorney is important, and there are certain characteristics you should look for in a property attorney.

Specialization

There are thousands of laws in the United States, and there are many different issues for which one person might sue another. There are 21 different practice areas of law in which an attorney can specialize. When a person graduates from law school and passes the bar, they will choose an area of practice.

Before you go in for a consultation, you should ask how many years of experience they have in property insurance law. Ask them how long they have been in practice and how many cases they have handled similar to yours.

A worthwhile property insurance lawyer should have experience in research, negotiations, and litigation. Although it is unusual for property insurance cases to go to court, it is not unheard of. The attorney you select should be able to represent you every step of the way.

Do they have time to handle your case?

You may think that the largest firm that employs the most attorneys and has the most clients would be the best place to find representation. This is not necessarily true. A law firm that has a lot of clients may not have enough time to focus on your case.

According to floridahomeclaim.com, building a legal case will take hours of research. A lawyer will have to read and understand every element of an insurance policy and will also have to research laws and other cases that may be pertinent to your policy.

Ask how big a staff a law firm has, how many cases they are currently working on, and how much time they will have to devote to your case. Your case should be of the utmost importance to the attorney you select.

Reputation

Whenever you look for goods and services online, you probably look for consumer reviews. Although reviews can be helpful, you never really know where they come from. You should ask for references from the attorney. Make sure to get references from fellow attorneys as well as former clients.

Contact the Florida State Bar Association and make sure there are no complaints against the lawyer. Ask the lawyer about their success rate, what professional organizations they belong to, and if they have won any awards or received any professional recognition.

Communication

Before you hire an attorney, you should ask how often you can expect to hear from them. Find out their office hours and find out when they will be available to answer your phone calls.

People get insurance so that they can feel safe, and it is terribly upsetting when an insurance company won’t pay what it should. A trained attorney can help you get the money you deserve.
