How Long Do Windows Last? A Simple Guide for Homeowners

Posted On Tuesday, 31 May 2022 20:07

Like most things in life, windows don't last forever. As with roofs, doors, and other parts of houses, window replacements are occasionally needed.

It can be difficult to choose what kind of window you need or if your windows even need to be replaced. If you're wondering about how long windows last and how to pick the best windows for your home or business, read on.

How Long Do Windows Last?

The lifespan of windows really depends on a few different factors. For example, US Window & Door mentions that factors like what type of window and the weather both affect the lifespan.

The type of window affects the lifespan, with vinyl windows lasting about 20 years, even longer if they are exceptionally well-maintained. Wood windows, on the other hand, will likely only last 10 or years, since they aren't as well-protected against weather conditions. Aluminum and fiberglass windows last the longest, at roughly 40 and 50 years.

Weather also affects windows because it can change the condition of windows. For example, in cold weather environments, ice may form in the open spaces between the windows and their frames. Warm air escapes through those openings and freezes when it comes in contact with the cold air outside, creating the ice that can make it more difficult to open or close the windows.

Heat can make window frames warp, particularly with wood windows that might contain moisture. When that moisture comes into contact with heat, the frames can warp. Also, when temperatures rapidly change from hot to cold or cold to hot, windows may crack.

Signs You Need New Windows

Many things indicate that your home or business needs new windows. From leaks to broken seals, there are a few signs to look out for if you think you need new windows.

If your window no longer opens or closes as easily as it once did, it may be time for new windows. Sometimes the issue is just a matter of fixing a few screws, but it can also indicate that it's time for new windows.

Another indication that new windows are needed is if you notice that your home is costing more to heat or cool. When this occurs, it could mean that the window panes are no longer doing their job. Leaks can occur in panes, which means the heat or air that's blowing in your house may be escaping.

Finally, condensation on the windows could be a sign of a bigger issue. When there is fog or condensation on your windows, it's likely that a seal is broken and no longer airtight. Sometimes these seals can be repaired, but sometimes a whole need window is required.
