Choosing a career in real estate will be a fruitful venture. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the mean hourly wage is $23.45 per hour and $48,770 annually for real estate agents as of 2021.

There are almost 520,000 available in the industry. The real estate industry is expected to grow 4% from 2020 to 2030.

You may be wondering if entering the real estate industry is the right career for you. Here are 5 helpful tips to get started.

1. Enroll in Real Estate School

As with any career, you must learn the tricks of the trade. Consider enrolling in a real estate school to sharpen your negotiation and sales skills to attract potential homeowners to purchase the properties you represent.

Some colleges and universities offer real estate courses to certify you in the field. To become certified, you must complete a certain number of hours and then complete and satisfactorily pass the corresponding licensing exam.

Once you obtain your real estate license, you can find many positions available at local real estate brokerage firms. You can also take a leap of faith and self-employ yourself without affiliating with a company.

2. Look For a Mentor

When you connect with a mentor who is another real estate agent, you can learn from him or her the steps they took to enter the field. Listen to their stories about how they became successful as they built experience in the industry.

Mentors should have the following traits to be the most effective in teaching you about real estate:

  • Great listeners.
  • Many years of experience.
  • Wisdom to coach you and help you think outside of the box.
  • Can give you thorough advice based on your questions and needs.

3. Market Yourself On Social Media

Whether you work for a real estate brokerage firm or you work for yourself, you should market yourself on social media. Connect with clients by doing the following on your social media accounts:

  • Make a list of what homeowners need to consider before purchasing a home. Close the post by providing your contact information.
  • Post a figurative scenario about one's desire to buy a house. Offer your contact information at the end of the post.
  • Post videos on your stories or feed (Facebook and Instagram) to attract your audience and increase your client base.

4. Learn the Current Trends

Research the real estate market news daily so you always know the current trends. Is it a buying or selling market at the moment? What is the nature of mortgage interest rates? What opportunities are available for first-time homebuyers?

Answer all of these questions and more as you continuously read up on the current trends. Utilize credible sources such as reading your local newspaper or reading the news and events section from the National Association of Realtors.

5. Make Pretend You Are Selling Your Own Home

Whether you have a house or apartment, do a few practice runs with friends and family. Present the amenities in the dwelling space, and any problems they should know about as you pretend to sell your home. Have the people role-playing with you and ask you tough questions so you can stay on your toes.

Don’t forget to look up local information about the neighborhood such as nearby stores, schools, and other key resources. This will get you prepared for the real experience out in the field.

Final Thoughts on Becoming a Real Estate Agent

Constant education, mentoring, and role-playing will help you to become a real estate agent. Take one step each day to reach your career goal.
