The meaning of fine art photography in contemporary art

Posted On Wednesday, 27 July 2022 15:44

Photography is one of the youngest forms of fine art. It emerged as daguerreotype in the 1830s, and thanks to its "mirror" technology it was magically beautiful, even in conventional landscape or portrait photography. Within a few years, dozens of salons opened and the photography boom began! Today photography is the most popular "entertainment" available to almost everyone.

Millions of photos are taken worldwide every minute. Photography remains an art thanks to photographers who know how to see the world in a special way.

What does fine art photography art differ from other art?

It would seem that photography originally was just a way of capturing reality - people, places of interest and memorable events. But as early as the 1850s Jean-Baptiste Gustave Le Gray, one of the pioneers of fine art photography, said - photography should be art! Yes, it combined scientific progress and human thirst for creativity in the best possible way, but how did it find its field, different from other forms of art?

The main difference is, of course, its special relationship to time. Only photography captures the moment, snatches a unique crumbling segment from the river of life. Reporter's photography grew out of this peculiarity, because the main luck of photojournalist is to catch that very moment.

The fundamental difference between photography and painting, drawing or sculpture is the selectivity of the artist's gaze, who decides for himself what of reality to transfer onto canvas, paper or clay.

How to create Fine art photography?

A high-class photographer does not use digital editing software to retouch reality, blur superfluous details or refuses to format or crop images. He has in his arsenal above all: a good angle, thorough lighting, different modes, shutter speed, a keen eye and a quick reaction. And of course, luck!

There is no doubt that photography has its own artistic language, its own techniques: after the long predominance of film, it has become digital, with almost limitless possibilities. But film, which has become a particular aesthetic (analogue photography), has not been forgotten. A picture might be staged, studio-like, carefully prepared, or it might come out of nowhere - and there's no single recipe for a successful masterpiece.

The popularity of fine art photography in the world

The art (or magic?) of photography has been popular since the mid-nineteenth century. It turned out that photography is indispensable for fixing fleeting life, for news in newspapers, for advertising and for fashion. In the 20th century documentary photography became very popular (Dorothea Lange, Walker Evans, August Sander, Evgeny Khaldei, Eugene Smith), and a very appealing trend within it was street photography (Henri Cartier-Bresson, Vivian Maier, Bert Hardy, Alexander Ranchukov, Stephen Shore). It's no exaggeration to say that some of his work has gone around the world - such as Steve McCurry's portrait of an Afghan girl in 1985. The girl is long grown up, and her blue eyes stare back at humanity. Today, there are many competitions for photographers around the world that showcase beautiful work by talented artists in a variety of genres. Photography has conquered all other art forms and is present in every home in the form of amateur or professional artwork.
