Tips to Make Your Home Safer

Posted On Wednesday, 31 August 2022 20:26

With an estimated 134,000 burglaries reported in 2020, you should find several ways of burglar-proofing your home. While you may prefer decorating and renovating your house to improve its appearance, you should prioritize installations that improve its safety. Burglars primarily target vulnerabilities in the garage door, kitchen, bedroom windows, and back doors. Fortunately, these break-ins can easily be preventable with a few adjustments. Below are a few ways to improve your home security.

1.  Secure the Front Door

Surprisingly, most burglars enter properties through the front doors, and many simply stroll into the house because the doors aren’t properly secured. Upgrading your home security should begin by securing your front door. You can secure your front door in the following ways:

  • Install security screen doors from Doors Plus as an additional line of defense
  • Install a deadbolt to upgrade the locks. Deadbolts are secure because they come with unique locking built-in bolts that prevent unauthorized entry
  • Change the locks if you are relocating to a new house
  • Make sure that the mailbox cannot be reached and used to unlock the front door
  • Stop hiding your front door keys in the window ledge, garden bed, or garden pot. Instead, install a secret lock box to keep your spare keys
  • Upgrade your locks to smart locks that can be opened with a swipe card or keypad

If you recently moved into a new house, ensure that you change all the door locks. With this, you can be sure strangers don’t have keys to your house. You should also upgrade the garage and side garden doors.

2.  Always Lock the Windows

After the front door, windows, especially ground floor windows, are intruders’ preferred entry method. Off-street windows and those on the side appeal to intruders as they can’t be spotted easily by passers-by and neighbors. Ensure you lock your windows before leaving home to prevent this favorite entry method.

Inspecting the structural strength of window latches is also important. Interestingly, some might be flimsy and easily vulnerable. You should also install reed switches on the doors that notify you if you leave windows ajar before leaving home.

3.  Add Obstructions

Apart from locks, installing obstructions around your property further makes it challenging for burglars to enter. You can achieve this through:

  • Erecting a tall fence or using thorny shrubs, hedges, and other barriers clearly demarcates your property
  •  Installing functional security alarm systems that raise alerts if the security barriers are breached
  • Installing CCTV security cameras alongside active alarm systems can also deter burglars. These cameras capture clear images day and night, which can be used as evidence
  • Install modern burglar bars on sliding windows to prevent intruders and improve overall curb appeal
  • If you love pets, having trained dogs on your property prevents opportunist burglars lurking in your neighborhood

Endnote

While some security installations require a heavy initial investment, they are a fraction of what burglars can take during a successful robbery. However, to avoid such heightened security concerns, ensure that you relocate to a secure neighborhood.
