5 great ways to make your property winterproof

Posted On Tuesday, 14 February 2023 20:00

Whether you are reading this in the lead-up to winter, or after the warmth of spring has begun to creep in, it is never too early to start winterproofing your property. Here are 5 ways that you can make sure your property is ready for all weather, and also might even save you a bit of money whilst you are at it.

  1. 1. Block up any draughts

Even when you have your heating on full-blast, heat can escape through gaps, cracks, and holes in your property – this wasted heat can not only be frustrating but also costly. In fact, it is estimated that draught-proofing windows and doors can save you £60 a year, and draught-proofing your chimney an additional £90.

This is particularly the case with older properties. if you have an older fireplace, it is likely that you are losing a lot of heat through the chimney. Therefore, it is crucial to properly block this area. However, that does not mean you have to forgo your fireplace. Instead, why not consider an electric fireplace that will both be aesthetically pleasing and help warm your room?

  1. 2. Assess your boiler and radiators

Boilers and radiators require regular maintenance to stay in proper working condition. By undertaking an annual boiler service, and checking radiators to ascertain whether they require bleeding, you can rest assured that your heating system will be more efficient, and that it will keep you nice and warm throughout the cooler months.

  1. 3. Insulate loft, walls, and pipes

Insulating your loft and walls is key to ensuring that the heat stays inside your home when its cold outside. In fact, loft insulation alone could reduce your heating bills by up to £315 a year, according to Which?.

On the other hand, insulating your pipes will reduce the risk of drastic temperature changes within the pipes. During the winter, it goes without saying that the water in the pipes might freeze and expand, which can suddenly increase pressure and cause pipes to crack or burst.

  1. 4. Check the roof

The cold is not the only issue you might face during winter – another problem you might encounter is water, be it from heavy rain, ice, or melting snow. For this reason, it is important to ensure that your roof is well-maintained.

If your roof has any cracks or gaps, water will have the opportunity to enter your home. Not only can this cause mould and mildew to thrive, but it can also affect the structural integrity of the property, too.

  1. 5. Clear gutters and downspouts from debris

When it comes to the risk of water damage, your roof is not the only thing to consider – you should also take a look at your roofline products, particularly your gutters and downspouts. After all, they are designed to catch and funnel rainwater, so, if there is an issue, it won’t stop water naturally flowing in this direction.

Check your gutters and downspouts for any cracks or damage. Then, regularly inspect and clear out your gutters and downspouts from any debris – such as moss, dirt, or fallen leaves – to ensure water can effectively run away from your home.

With these tips in mind, you will be able to better prepare your property for the winter to come, whether that winter is rapidly approaching or almost a year away alike.
