Here’s something you wouldn’t really know unless you’ve had to deal with something similar. Elderly people don’t like moving houses, especially if they have lived in one particular place or house for most of their lives.

This, according to the Current Psychology journal, is called place attachment. As the term suggests, place attachment is the emotional connection people end up having with a physical space.

As per the British Geriatrics Society, past memories are like treasures to the elderly. These memories can be attached to a physical space as well, which is why seniors don’t enjoy relocating to a new place.

That being said, sometimes, you can't help but have your elderly parents relocate to a new home. However, the relocation shouldn’t be a bother to them as long as you can help your senior parents adjust to the new place. Here’s how this can be arranged.

Don’t Throw Away Old Furniture and Items

When helping your elderly parents move, it's essential to keep their old furniture and cherished items. These possessions aren't just material objects, they represent a lifetime of memories and comfort.

As you bring familiar pieces into the new home, you create a bridge between the past and the present, easing their transition. Arrange their favorite chair by the window or hang up those familiar family photos in the hallway. These items provide continuity and a sense of security in the new environment, making it feel more like home.

Remember, it’s the small touches that can make the biggest difference in helping them feel settled and content.

Decorate the New House a Little Like the Old One

On the subject of ensuring familiarity, why not decorate the new house like the old one your parents lived in?

Once again, we’re working to make the new place feel like home to your elderly parents. Hence, keeping certain aspects of the old house in the new one is not a bad idea.

Start with the interior colors of your elderly parents’ new home. If it was blue in the old one, keep it blue in the new one. If it was beige in the old one, keep it the same in the new one as well.

Arrange the furniture and decor items as they were before as well. Avoid bringing in new furniture or replacing the old one immediately. Also, don’t just introduce new decor items, at least not without their permission first. Give your parents the chance to chime in as they will feel more comfortable adjusting to the new place that way.

Help Them Find New Hobbies

Encouraging your elderly parents to pick up new hobbies can be an excellent way to help them adjust to their new home. Look for local clubs or classes that match their interests, whether it’s painting or a book club.

Gardening, in particular, can help as stress relief for your elderly parents. The therapeutic benefits of gardening are endless. It can help your parents with their physical health as well as their mental health and emotional well-being. Gardening can also help prevent dementia.

Besides, outdoor gardening can also help your parents with social interaction. They can engage with their neighbors and passers-by occasionally while gardening.

Engaging in new activities can provide a sense of purpose and a way to meet new people. Hobbies can also be a great way to fill their time constructively and bring joy.

Get Them to Interact with People from the Neighborhood

Building social connections in the new neighborhood is vital for your elderly parents’ well-being. Encourage them to interact with their new neighbors and participate in community events. You might host a small gathering or introduce them to friendly neighbors.

Social interaction can significantly reduce feelings of isolation and make the new place feel like home. It helps them build a support network, which can be crucial for their happiness and security. The more familiar faces they see around, the more comfortable and settled they will feel in their new environment.

Can Your Parents Easily Adjust to Their New Home?

Although not that easy, it’s not impossible to get your parents to adjust to a new home. From ensuring familiarity to getting them into different hobbies, there are numerous ways of doing so.

With a bit of effort from your end, your elderly parents will not face a lot of difficulties in adjusting to their new home. They just need a little push and some willpower, that’s all.
