Many of us find moving a really hectic and stressful process. Your home is more than just somewhere you sleep and keep your stuff - it symbolizes stability and protection, and packing that all up and moving it elsewhere can be a lot.

There are a number of strategies that you can embrace to make the whole thing a lot more manageable. Perhaps the most important thing you can do - especially if you have a lot of stuff - is to start packing sooner rather than later. With that in mind, here’s a general timeline for when you should get started.

Long-term (1-2 months)

The long-term part of the packing process should be started a couple of months in advance. This will consist of general preparation - slowly but surely clearing out the things that you don’t need anymore, and having a very thorough declutter.

How long you need for this will depend on how much stuff you have, of course. If you’ve lived in your house for a long time, you’ll likely be surprised at the sheer amount of stuff you’ve accumulated. Getting that down to the essentials can be pretty exhausting, and you don’t want to have to do it all at once.

Medium-term (2-4 weeks)

Afterward, you’ll want to slowly start packing up your non-essential items. This includes everything from things like books and board games to seasonal clothes and bedding that you’re not using at that time of year.

Again, you want to leave enough time so that you can do this in a calm and collected manner. Make sure that you’re labelling every box with its contents and the room that it should go in at the other end. This will help to ensure that the moving and unpacking process goes as smoothly as possible.

Short-term (1-4 days)

Finally, in the days running up to the move you can finish packing your day-to-day essentials. This includes things like your bedding, shoes, pots and pans, and your TV. Make sure that you pack things like your toothbrush, pajamas, and any other absolute essentials somewhere that’s easily accessible - you’ll need these items on hand and shouldn’t have to search through your boxes to find them.

Doing it last minute

While it’s always best to try to start this process as early as reasonably possible, in some circumstances that might not be possible. If, for whatever reason, you’re simply unable to get it all done early enough, it’s important that you use any services that could make things a bit easier.

For example, you could consider using a packing service from somewhere like Kiwi Movers. They can bring boxes and packing materials and help you get everything boxed up, making the task feel a lot less overwhelming.

Packing is somewhat of an art, and it’s absolutely worth taking some time to get it right. By starting that process a couple of months in advance, you can help to make the move as stress-free as reasonably possible.
