A Checklist to Find the Right Neighborhood

Written by Posted On Wednesday, 27 May 2015 13:33

Selecting the right neighborhood is just as important as selecting the right home. What good is a three-bedroom, two-bath home loaded with amenities if you’re an introvert and situated between two nosy neighbors? Finding the right fit in a neighborhood is a key component in the relocation process. Here are some tips on finding the perfect neighborhood for your family.

Schools Make the Neighborhood

Whether or not you plan to have kids, good schools are an indication of a thriving neighborhood. If a community is focused on its youth, the community will usually grow. More people will want to relocate there, which in turn boosts property values.

Access to Transportation an Important Factor

Drive or walk around the prospective neighborhood to see how easy it is to get to stores, government offices, and banks. Is it close to public transportation? Can you access major highways quickly and easily from the neighborhood? How long will it take you go get to and from work? Before you decide to buy a property in a neighborhood, you need to check out the neighborhood’s transportation options.

What Amenities Do You Need

Consider your family’s lifestyle. Do your children participate in the arts or in sports? You will need to choose a neighborhood that offers opportunities for you or your children to take part in those activities. If you like water sports or like to fish, you may want to locate in a neighborhood that offers easy access to the waterfront. People who like nature may prefer a neighborhood with plenty of parks. Others may want to be located in a community that actively promotes the arts, with theaters, concert halls, and galleries nearby.

Look for a Neighborhood With the Right Vibe

Each neighborhood has a unique cultural feel. Some neighborhoods are staid havens of perfect snobs, while others are filled with friendly people who look out for each other. Some neighborhoods are filled with history, while others have a post-modern industrial feel. Walk around the streets of any prospective neighborhood. Engage the people in conversation, or simply wait to see if they reach out to you. Sit down in a neighborhood café and sample the wares of its markets. When you find a neighborhood with an atmosphere that feels right to you, that’s the place to look for your new home.

After you list your must-haves in a neighborhood, transfer them to a spreadsheet. When you check out each neighborhood for its suitability, you can check off whether the neighborhood meets your criteria. A spreadsheet makes it easy to see at a glance which neighborhoods in which you should consider relocating. Next, look for a home in the most suitable neighborhoods. After you’ve made your selection, contact your local mortgage professionals to secure the best financing for your new home.
