Choose the Right Size Truck

Moving vans are measured either in square or cubic feet. Truck rental companies generally have guidelines or online wizards to help estimate the size of vehicle you’ll need. In addition, you can always ask customer service to help you choose an appropriate size.

Use Proper Packing Materials

Loading your moving van is easier if you have the right packing materials. Use sturdy boxes to protect your possessions and to make stacking easier. You can use paper, blankets, towels and even clothing to protect fragile items. You’ll also need tape, ropes and bungee cords to secure anything that can move or shift in the truck.

Begin With Heavy Items

In general, pack heavier things first. Place appliances and bulky furniture along the walls of the truck and distribute the weight evenly. Flat objects such as mirrors, tabletops, mattresses and box springs should be placed upright along the walls. Couches can be placed on end. Secure everything with ties and extra padding as needed. If you arrange heavy items along the front and sides of the truck, you can reserve the middle area for lighter articles that load more easily. Make sure your furniture’s protective padding and covers are in place as you continue to pack.

Fill a Section at a Time

Make the most of your truck’s space by loading from the floor to the ceiling. Place heavy things low and stack lighter items on top. Mentally divide the truck’s space into quarter sections, and as you load each portion, secure it with ropes or straps attached to the tie-down rings. Be sure the truck is packed tightly to minimize shifting.

To make the first days in your new home easier, pack several containers with clothing, toiletries and other essentials for each member of the family. Stow these necessities last, near the door of the truck, so you can easily reach them. In addition, if you have sensitive papers or electronics such as laptops, consider carrying these with you so you don’t lose track of them.
