How to Make the Most of Your Narrow Spaces


 

You don’t have to be a designer or an architect to make your small spaces look and feel larger than they actually are. By following these basic storage and organizational rules your flat will look spacious, clean and cozy at the same time.

THE BASICS

Maximize Light

Place mirrors around the house to reflect and spread light. Light is your best friend when living in a tiny dwelling. The more, the better. Instead of wooden furniture, think of placing glass tables or clear plastic chairs. They don’t intercept light, but allow it to go further, through the material.

Furniture

People normally use small couches and chairs to furnish the living area, but sometimes one big sectional can be a far better decision. Do not be deceived that it will rule the room -- in terms of efficiency and functionality a larger sofa with moving parts would be way more beneficial.

Think Vertically

Remember, each room has eight corners! Make the most of the vertical space and use it for hanging shelves, pieces of art, furniture and storage solutions. This way draws the eye up, making any area look more extensive than it really is.

Curtains

Never hang your curtains in the middle of the window frame, because they will hinder the light to go inside. Hang them from the ceiling to add height to the area, and make sure that they don’t cover any part of the window.

KITCHEN

Wire Shelves

Wire shelves take up very little space which makes them a must in every tiny kitchen space.

Cabinets

Aim for light-shaded cabinets with glass front doors, or no doors, to leave the impression that your kitchen is much bigger than it actually is.

Use a Caddy to Store Cleaning Supplies

The benefit of storing your cleaning solutions in a caddy is that it gives you the opportunity to take the container with you in any room you are going to clean. This way you save space, because the need of supplies storage in the bathroom or in the basement is eliminated.

Use Magnetic Boards

Any free space is valuable here so you could consider hanging the utensils on magnetic or cork boards, and some of the pots and pans beside the wall.

LIVING ROOM

Furnish Wisely

Instead of numerous small items, place a few big, bold ones to keep the clean and simple look of your interior space. The prime furnishings should be scaled to fit with each other.

Simplify Things

Avoid buying furnishings with wide arms and too many throw pillows on top. All kinds of armless chairs and sofas are acceptable. Also, opt for mono- or dichromatic coloring, since multicolored and complex patterns will make the space feel cluttered.

Mount Your TV On a Flexible Arm

The flexible arms are great space savers, because this way the need for a TV stand is eliminated.
